This set was sold in the US as a Special Edition set at the LEGO Store and Toys 'R' Us. Motorization is based on latest Train Motor and Power Functions containing Power Functions Rechargeable Battery Box, Power Functions IR Receiver and Power Functions IR Speed Remote Control. This set is similar in idea to 7898 Cargo Train Deluxe, the only major difference, apart from colours, being that the 2006 set had the old RC system, instead of power functions; and a large overhead crane and container truck. Included track elements are: eight pieces of Straight Rails, 16 pieces of Curved Rails and 16 pieces of the new Flexible Train Track as well as one left and one right Switching Track.

The track supplied with this set is the absolute minimum required though, so we felt we had to buy two additional boxes of track LEGO City 7499: Flexible Tracks and LEGO City 7895: Train Tracks to make it interesting and flexible enough from the start. We have since added a lot more track including a crossover piece, which is not made by Lego.I was concerned by the idea that this set takes 9 AAA batteries, and some of the reviews here suggest that only certain batteries work. I decided to try Amazon's rechargeable batteries which are rated at 1.2V instead of 1.5V for disposable alkalines. AmazonBasics AAA Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries 800 mAh [Pack of 12] They work perfectly and despite being slightly lower voltage, the train is still really fast - easily fast enough to come off on the corners at the higher speed settings.
