Valid only while supplies last; Every day more than 50 international ships pass the Welcome Point on the Elbe River. They are welcomed by their national anthem and Wagner’s Sailor’s Chorus. The flags of the different countries are hoisted up on the 40 m (131 ft.) high mast. Departing ships are bid farewell with the old navy salute ’Und allzeit gute Fahrt‘ (a safe trip at all times).

This ritual is unique in the whole world. The Welcome Point in MINILAND was built in 465 man-hours out of 124,960 LEGO® bricks and weighs 142 kg (313 lb). The total area of the Port of Hamburg is around 7,236 hectares. The channel that connects Hamburg with the North Sea has an average high tide of 16 m (52 ft.). About 300 regular routes connect Hamburg with 1,100 ports all over the world, so Hamburg is Germany’s ’Gateway to the World‘. Based on the goods handled, Hamburg is Germany’s biggest sea port. More than 70 % of the goods are made up of bulk commodities like petroleum products, grains, oil seeds, coal and ore. The container port Waltersdorf has its own freight terminal, storage areas and berths and is the destination of the largest container ships in the world. The Port of Hamburg is 8,700 hectares in width, features a sea wall that stretches 45 km (27 mi.) and has berths for more than 300 boats and cruise ships. The sheer magnitude of the port is hard to fathom.

Harbor tours get started at the floating docks at St. Pauli which is lined by 200 m (656 ft.) of buildings in Art Nouveau style. There is also the hard to miss East Tower. At MINILAND the floating docks are about nine meters (26 ft.) in length and a total of 367,400 LEGO® bricks were use with an overall weight of 417.5 kg. A floating dock is a rectangular, u-shaped steel raft with hollow walls which can be pumped full with water until it sinks. Then a ship can be pulled onto the sunken dock. When the walls are pumped empty again, the dock floats up and the ship is completely out of water and can then be repaired or cleaned. Large ships need a dry dock on land which works like a lock. Elbe 17 by Blohm + Voss is one of these and measures almost 350 m (1,148 ft.) long and more than 50 m (164 ft.) wide. Do you ever dream of being in a real windjammer in the middle of the ocean? The cabin boys among the LEGO® friends spent 640 man-hours and used 74,000 LEGO bricks to launch this proud sailing ship that once sailed the oceans.

The original ship, which was built in 1896, is now much admired and frequently visited in a museum in the Port of Hamburg. High-tech: This model was built using a computer program specially developed for the LEGO® company program. From 1962 to 1981, the Cap San Diego sailed regularly between Europe and the east coast of South America. The elegant and fast cargo ship with its big refrigerated storage room and space for 12 passengers was called ’the White Swan of the South Sea‘. Nowadays, the Cap San Diego is a museum ship with a restaurant that is open to the public. The Hamburg DOM is the biggest funfair in North Germany and has its origin in a church. In the 11th century, merchants, showmen and jesters looked for shelter from wind and weather in what used to be St. Mary’s Cathedral. The cathedral was torn down, and the merchants and carousel owners wandered through every district until they were granted the place called Heiligengeistfeld (field of the Holy Spirit) in 1893, which is still their base today.

Three times a year events take place here. The pirate ship at MINILAND is powered by pneumatics. At the biggest funfair in North Germany the famous Ferris wheel is hard to miss. Standing at an imposing height of 60 m (196 ft.) you have an amazing view of the funfair that stretches over the roofs of Hamburg as far as the harbor. Our MINILAND model is powered by a small photovoltaic system located on the roof of the railway station. A photovoltaic system converts sun rays into electric energy. Our mini system is capable of 0.5 W with 24 V direct voltage. Our Ferris wheel will still turn if the skies are cloudy. Speicherstadt or Storage City was built in 1888 and is the largest warehouse district in the world. The buildings are up to seven storeys high. They were made out of the same bricks and their architectural features include lots of small gables, bay windows and turrets. Thanks to the good ’room climate‘ almost anything can be stored at Storage City. It is also a duty-free port where products can be bought duty free.
