PANDORA bracelet charms are back in fashion this Christmas, and the Pokemon Go craze has driven shoppers back to the computer games.

But the hottest gift this year is definitely the Hatchimal, the furry Furby-like creatures which emerge from an egg and grow before your eyes, according to Citi retail analyst Craig Woolford. Also on the top 10 list for 2016 are Lego, described as a “consistent favourite”, the new Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer and the Pie Face Showdown board gameImproved range, battery life and reliability of wireless headphones across all manufacturers this year have put wireless headphones on the list of Christmas must-haves.Toys from the popular children’s cartoon Paw Patrol are also in demand, as is the Adidas Originals sneaker. Rounding out the list is the latest fashion in handbags, the bucket bag — either from Mimco or Mansur Gavriel.“Christmas 2016 is likely to deliver softer growth than last year but could provide a late surge,” Mr Woolford wrote. “The hot gifts this year are ‘back to the future’ in areas such as board games and fashion. The hottest gift, ‘Hatchimals’, is already sold out, while the number of electronic gifts under the tree is likely to be lower.”

Mr Woolford said while shifts in promotional timing and better online offers could help Christmas sales, the most crucial element was the appeal of products for shoppers.“We have searched high and low to see what is likely to be most popular for Christmas 2016. The overriding conclusion is that the number of hot items seems down on prior years and the appeal in electronics versus other product categories is lower,” he wrote.Of the ASX-listed retailers, Citi says JB Hi-Fi, Myer, Super Cheap Auto and Target are best prepared for Christmas in terms of their e-commerce platform, delivery and social media presence. The Australian Retailers Association predicts shoppers will spend more than $48.1 billion in retail stores over the Christmas trading period from November 15 to December 24, an increase of 2.3 per cent on last year. But the overall retail sector is facing headwinds. Retail sales rose 2.1 per cent in October compared with the prior year, half the rate of growth seen in September and the weakest month of sales growth since June 2013.“

All major categories experienced a deceleration from September, with the exception of hardware which continues to be boosted by clearance activity,” Mr Woolford wrote.Mr Woolford warned that while the adoption of Black Friday sales in Australia is a “novelty” and “successful initially for those that execute it well”, overall industry margins suffer due to the heavy focus on promotions.Department store sales declined 4.4 per cent, the fourth consecutive month of negative growth, weighed down by changes to strategy at Target and Big W. “Our feedback suggests that Myer and David Jones were also less promotional in October 2016 than the prior corresponding period,” he wrote. But Myer has bucked the overall trend, gaining 55 basis points of market share in the category over the past three months and delivering sales growth of 0.6 per cent, compared with a 2.6 decline in department stores overall.“Retail spending has had a soft start to the December quarter, with both food and non-food retailing experiencing challenging trading conditions,” Mr Woolford wrote.“

Industry feedback suggests November trading conditions improved relative to October, but are not as buoyant as the same period last year. Risks are building towards a softer Christmas in 2016, particularly if retailers begin discounting in early December.”THE TOP 10 CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR 2016*1. Hatchimals — Already sold out in stores.
