We shouldn’t be surprised that this seemingly random mishmash of stars from opposite ends of the globe have teamed up for the sake of Japanese advertising, but hey, we’re only human. Unlike some digital pop stars. Yesterday, Japanese hair care company Lux launched their new commercial “movie,” starring the mega popular virtual idol Hatsune Miku and, in a complete surprise, Hollywood A-lister Scarlett Johansson.

We’re here to break down the seemingly non-congruent events in this video. Get ready for the ride, kids. It’s full of way too many surprises for a hair care commercial. In the middle of a city street, we see the blue-haired pop star contemplate her very essence of being, as she ponders her hair. “Of course I like the way I always look but..” She notices a giant screen on a building playing a Lux commercial starring ScarJo. It’s like a commercial within a commercial, you guys. Miku pulls out her ponytail holders “I’m going straight ahead!”Straight like her hair being worn straight, and living “straightforward.” Deciding to wear her hair straight down somehow results in Miku singing to an overly excited crowd in a theater. The scene is a debut of Miku’s new song Future Overture (Lux Ver.) and is all about living your life like you wear your hair: straightforward. Here are the song lyrics translated:I will live straightLook, if I walk out

Longing turns into reality on the stageDid you really have so many obstacles in your Vocaloid life that you needed this shampoo to fix them all? The scene transitions to Miku admiring herself in a mirror, declaring, “The me with straight hair is shining!” And guess who interrupts this narcissistic reverie? The Black Widow Scarlett Johansson! “Hi Miku, this is Scarlett. Being true to who you are makes all your dreams possible.” Miku, what the hell is going on in your life that ScarJo has you on speed dial to call you whenever she senses you staring into a mirror? Are you a witch? Perhaps we will never know. From here, the commercial dissolves into a pink dream with Miku informing the viewer that the new Straight & Beauty line from Lux will change your whole goddamn life. Also, I think she’s supposed to be in Paris. Hatsune Miku is a computer-generated super pop star in the otaku world. Created by Crypton Future Media, her voice is made by the Vocaloid voice synthesizer program, which you can purchase to program her to perform any song digitally.

Her wide-spread popularity has brought her fame enough that a 3-D projection version of herself performs to packed theaters around the globe. Miku has spawned multiple video games and merchandise, ranging from bags, to clothing, to figurines galore. Future Overture (Lux Ver.), along with most of Miku’s songs, are produced by Mitchie M., who is responsible for developing Miku’s famous auto-tuned voice. You can check out the loads of Hatsune Miku songs he’s developed on his YouTube. You can check out this bizarred “press conference” where Hatsune Miku announces her collaboration with Lux shampoo here. The voice is super jarring when it’s not singing. Have you bought into the Hatsune Miku craze? We know that popular culture has, at least in Japan. The commercial is a fascinating look into what happens when Japan decides that celebrity power is all that’s needed to sell a mid-range shampoo set. Would you buy it?“IRON MAN 2” COUNTDOWN: 24 DAYS Tony Stark breaks all the rules (even the one that says superheroes must keep a secret identity), and he always seems to comes out on top — that’s why we love him.

But now comes “Iron Man 2,” a film about secret dangers, the sins of the father and the nasty price of modern celebrity. The movie lands May 7 in the U.S., and every day until then, we’ll have behind-the-scenes scoops on the summer’s most anticipated film. Which Black Widow will show up in “Iron Man 2“? Scarlett Johansson has the role of the dangerous (and dangerously curvy) mystery woman who shows up in the life of Tony Stark with less-than-clear intentions. Director Jon Favreau has made it clear that her presence in the film is to add some dramatic strain to the relationship between playboy-turned-hero Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and his brainy factotum, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). “She is not what she presents herself as, but I don’t want to say more,” says Favreau, who is well aware of the Marvel Comics heritage of the character but is also quite comfortable with keeping what he likes and jettisoning what doesn’t serve his story arc — just look at the changes to Justin Hammer and Whiplash, who are markedly different from their namesakes in the comics.

“It’s fun,” he says, “to keep people guessing. Part of the comics is the mystery surrounding character and then the sexual dynamic but also the cold-blooded efficiency like the spider.” Widow made her first appearance in the comics in the Cold War year of 1964 as a seductive Russian spy, but a few years later her story took a twist as she became a defector. The character has been both villain and hero and, in her most interesting incarnations, a proud wild card who turns on the spy agencies who employ her. Favreau said Johannson was so eager to get the role she dyed her hair red for her meeting with the director to help him visualize her in character. “She’s the best,” the director said. “You forget how young she is when you deal with her because she is such a smart woman. I get why Woody Allen has worked with her so many times because she is such a smart, smart woman. She asks the right questions, she’s got that intelligence, but she’s also very trusting in a director.
