What did BIG W have on sale last year?Big W tends to keep its Boxing Day sales pretty safe as houses until closer to the date, but last year it was offering 50% off Tefal pans, 20% off CityBeach gift cards, 20% of XBox Live and other Xbox One discounts. This year, we’re predicting similar sales, with homewares being the store’s biggest bargain.During the Christmas holidays, Big W was offering discounts on a wide range of toys (20% off, kids’ furniture and books and consoles), so unless they don’t sell out, it’s likely these discounts will continue through Boxing Day to finish clearing off that stock.Big W is one of Australia’s largest low-price department stores and sells everything from fashion, entertainment and homewares to furniture, toys and gardening products.

Not everything will be on sale during Boxing Day, but considering it has so many departments there’s bound to be something on sale that you need.If you’re planning to shop online, the store is open 24/7, but fulfillment will not be until the following working day. If you’re planning to shop in-store, trading hours will vary depending on the location of your closest Big W and may also depend on the hours of the shopping centre it is housed in.Generally, Big W stores will be open late (up until midnight) on Christmas Eve, be closed on Christmas Day and be open on Boxing Day for limited hours (e.g. 11am-5pm).To search for your local Big W and find out its opening times over the holiday break click here. Are there benefits of buying from Big W online on Boxing Day?The main benefit of purchasing online is the convenience of not having to go in-store for your items and to avoid the crowds. Other benefits include ease of finding the products you want (all you need to do is complete an online search to find what you want instead of wandering the aisles) and stock differences as, to ensure that stores can fulfill their online orders, they sometimes allocate a certain amount of stock to online purchases only, which they leave at the warehouse.

It can be beneficial to go in-store for Boxing Day sales as well, as clearance stock from the physical store might not be available online and could see major markdowns because they’re damaged or are the last of its stock.Whether you’re shopping at home or online, it always pays to do your research and shop before the sale. Browse the racks and see what could be of benefit to you and note how much each item costs. You might also like to put a few of these items in your online shopping cart in anticipation of the sales. Then, on Boxing Day you can see how much the item has dropped. If it’s a good deal, then hit that checkout button for a quick purchase before anyone else can get to it.Understand that not all items will be on sale. If 2014 is anything to go by, Big W prefers to drop prices in specific departments only, so don’t put all your eggs in one basket and look to other stores as well for discounts in the departments you want to shop in.Big W is a low-cost department store which prides itself on everyday low prices and is very competitive in the market.

Its best deals lie with its store brands and in its discount sales. It has a tendency to offer discounts on otherwise fixed-priced items like gift cards, which might be worth investing in for future shopping when the store does not have a sale on.Sign up to VIP Newsletter Big WBig W Waverley Gardens offer a huge range of fashion and accessories for the entire family, along with homewares, electrical,  travel, home entertainment, and much much more. For the current Big W catalogue, visit the Big W website by clicking the link in the store contact section.Best Parking:There are 750 carparking spaces (on two levels) that will give you direct access to the front entrance of Big W. From Hansworth Street, take the 2nd or 3rd entry into Waverley Gardens.Opening Hours T: (03) 8793-3304 Gordon Cairns is proving to be a man of action in the boardrooms of corporate Australia, but his next big problem looms large as marauding online giant Amazon prepares to roll out its general merchandise and fresh food offer in Australia next year.

As chairman of Woolworths since September 2015, Cairns was a prime mover in stemming the $3 billion in red ink from the Masters hardware disaster, with a shutdown now playing out with the final few days of last-ditch clearance sales at Masters stores. But the other big problem child, the Big W chain, also requires some serious surgery and bold strategic decisions. The answers aren't easy to find because of the shifting sands in Australian retail as Amazon prepares to snare an estimated $4 billion out of the current market with a full-tilt approach over the next five years, according to Citigroup research. Big W still generates $3.8 billion in annual sales even though it has lost its way and made a loss of $14.9 million in 2015-16. This is upending the general merchandise sector which has a history in Australia of cannibalism between Big W's two great rivals, Target and Kmart, which have been run side-by-side in the same company since the mid-1980s. Big shopping centre landlords are also nervous about the fate of Big W, which on Morgan Stanley numbers equates to about $2.5 billion in lease liabilities.

Across the entire discount department store market there are simply too many stores across the country to service a shrinking overall pie. On Citigroup numbers discount department store sales in Australia are at their lowest point for eight years.Cairns, who has been chairman of Origin Energy since October 2013, showed he wasn't prepared to sit on his hands either with the oil and gas company. On Tuesday Origin announced a $1.8 billion-plus float of the oil and gas business, even though it wasn't the full monty approach of a bigger de-merger which some investors thought should have included the $25 billion Australia Pacific LNG Project. He was also a circuit-breaker in the strategic future of department store retailer David Jones during a short stint as chairman in 2014 which ultimately resulted in a higher takeover offer from South African retailer Woolworths Holdings, ending a period of uncertainty that originally included on-again and off-again merger talks with rival Myer.Righting the supermarkets business at Woolworths is the main game for Cairns and chief executive Brad Banducci, but there won't be a "do nothing" approach to Big W.

The chain, which started in 1964 as a stand-alone outlet in Newcastle to expand what had been a smallish general merchandise offer inside Woolworths Variety stores, still generates $3.8 billion in annual sales even though it has lost its way and made a loss of $14.9 million in 2015-16.Kmart was a laggard almost a decade agoLike its two big rivals in discount department stores, Kmart and Target, Big W has had fluctuating fortunes over an extended period. While Kmart is now a star in the Wesfarmers stable, it's worth remembering that in 2007 when Wesfarmers acquired the Coles Group for $19 billion, chief executive Richard Goyder put Kmart under the microscope and toyed with a potential sale, such was its drag on returns because of poor performance. The retail landscape is now vastly different and at the heart of Big W's problems are some big structural shifts. The exit three weeks ago of Sally McDonald from the chief executive role added further upheaval and meant a head-spinning fourth change at the top in three years.
