Yesterday, we posted the short film “Power/Rangers” from Joseph Kahn, a brutal, graphic adaptation of the Power Rangers franchise starring Katee Sackhoff and James Van Der Beek. The NSFW video was posted to Vimeo early on Tuesday and was even designated a staff pick by the video-sharing site. But by late afternoon, it was taken down due to pressure from Saban Entertainment, which owns the rights to Power Rangers and has been planning their own reboot, slated for 2016. The SFW version is still available on YouTube. Vimeo sent Kahn an email, according to Deadline, stating, “Vimeo is the host for your videos and as a host for user-generated content, we are fully compliant with the notice and takedown provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. It looks like your video was removed due to a copyright infringement claim by: Tim Quinlan, SCG Power Rangers LLC.” Kahn tweeted out in response to his short film being taken down. Saban is trying to shut POWER/RANGERS down.

Soon.— Joseph Kahn (@JosephKahn) February 24, 2015 An entertainment industry attorney told Deadline that Kahn may have what is called a “fair use defense,” which allows a “certain amount of free use of copyrighted material.” And according to information from the U.S. Copyright Office, it’s not always clear what is fair use and what is infringement as there isn’t any specific cutoff in terms of words or images. However, a key deciding factor could be “whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes,” which may give Kahn a slight edge here as he has made it clear that this project was created purely for fun.
