Report game as brokenCancel report of broken gameBack to gameLEGO Batman Movie taps Billy Dee Williams to voice Two-Face The LEGO Movie — released in 2014 — was a smashing hit, and its LEGO Batman ended up being one of viewers’ favorite characters. The massive popularity of the movie spurred Warner Bros to plan The LEGO Movie 2, but that was soon bumped to a later date in favor of a different title: The LEGO Batman Movie. The movie’s team has already tapped a great cast of actors to voice its various characters, and now we know who is joining them: Billy Dee Williams as the voice of Two-Face. The information comes from movie director Chris McKay, who confirmed the news in response to a tweet someone sent him. Twitter user Brent Waller tweeted at McKay, saying, “Please tell me Billy Dee Williams voices Two Face?” He got a simple response back from McKay: “He does.”

Williams was originally slated to play Two-Face in the movie Batman Forever, only to be bumped in favor of Tommy Lee Jones. Many fans have long been disappointed by that decision, and so this news is extra special — no doubt for Williams as much as fans. Williams, of course, also played Lando Calrissian in the original Star Wars trilogy. Williams rounds out an excellent cast of actors voicing various LEGO characters. LEGO Batman is voiced by Will Arnett, while Robin is voiced by Michael Cera, Alfred by Ralph Fiennes, the Joker by Zach Galifianakis, and Batgirl by Rosario Dawson. The movie is set to hit theaters in February 2017.In watching the trailers for LEGO Batman, we’ve all been pumped about how much life and joy the movie appears to have. The jokes are fun, and the characterization of Batman is a lot campier while still reinforcing the intense loneliness that encompasses Bruce Wayne’s life and choices. And, of course, the movie looks like it aims to mine that loneliness for further comedic gold.

Here’s something else we’ve noticed: LEGO Batman looks like a much more diverse take on the Batman world. For example, Rosario Dawson’s iteration of Barbara Gordon has been designed to look just like her. Same goes for Two-Face, who will be voiced by Billy Dee Williams—probably best known for playing Lando Calrissian in Star Wars, but who also has played Two-Face previously in the 1989 Batman. Even some of the smaller bit parts have subverted expectations, such as Mariah Carey getting cast as the mayor of Gotham. It sounds like some of that was Chris McKay’s doing; he served as director for LEGO Batman, having previously co-directed The LEGO Movie, as well as directing and editing tons of episodes of Robot Chicken and Moral Orel. McKay told Film Journal that he’s a lifelong Batman fan, and that this movie was a total dream come true for him: “I’ve got a Catwoman tattoo on one arm, Superman tattoo on the other. I am super into making this movie.” Still, McKay sees the flaws in the Batman franchise, acknowledging, “The cast of characters in Batman is a sausage-fest.

It’s a bunch of white guys, for the most part.” He went on to say that he wanted to ensure that LEGO Batman‘s version of Gotham “looks like a real city,” with all the metropolitan diversity that tends to entail, like in “Chicago or New York or Los Angeles. That was really important [to me], to find ways of making the world look like it looks outside and sound like it sounds outside.” That meant casting actors like Rosario Dawson and Billy Dee Williams in familiar roles, but McKay also gave a shout-out to Mariah Carey’s performance as well: “She called up to say she wanted to audition for Barbara Gordon. She didn’t necessarily work for Barbara, but I thought she had such an interesting, great voice … She’s got a little bit of New York in there. She sounds like a hard-won, battle-hardened big-city mayor. It was a lot of fun. Every day that we recorded her, she always came to play.” What sounds most promising is McKay’s excitement that this will be a Batman movie for the whole family–just like the family-friendly superhero shows he grew up watching, like Super Friends, re-runs of Adam West’s Batman and, in the ’90s, Batman: The Animated Series.

As McKay points out, “it’s going to be some kid’s first Batman movie,” and this version of Gotham will be the one that they remember. It’s exciting to hear that this will be the version of Gotham City that those kids get to see. (via Film Journal, images via LEGO Wiki for Two Face and Batgirl) Want more stories like this? That's because Billy Dee Williams' Harvey Dent never actually manifested into Two-Face in Batman, and he was ultimately replaced as the character by Tommy Lee Jones for Batman Forever.

Chris McKay, who is making his feature film directorial debut with The Lego Batman Movie, made this revelation on Twitter. After being asked outright, "Please tell me Billy Dee Williams voices Two Face?" Chris McKay didn't dare beat around the bush, as he responded: He does https://t.co/sf1x4NtRzS— Chris McKay (@buddboetticher) November 30, 2016 At the moment we're not exactly sure quite how big Two Face's role in The Lego Batman Movie will be, but at least this time Chris McKay has already confirmed that Billy Dee Williams will get the full chance to portray Two Face. Especially since he looked so spiffing just as Harvey Dent. I mean, just look at him. There's every chance that Lego Batman Movie might poke fun at the decision not to continue with Billy Dee Williams as Two Face in the Batman franchise. Well, at least that's the hope, because it would be a bit of a waste if they didn't. Billy Dee Williams previously opened up at the 2013 Wizard World Nashville Comic Con (via Comic Book) about not reprising the role for Batman Forever, admitting that he'd originally hoped that he would.

However, once Tim Burton dropped out of the film and was replaced by Joel Schumacher the decision was made to take it in a "different direction." For a while there was an internet rumor that, despite being dropped as Harvey Dent in favor of Tommy Lee Jones, Billy Dee Williams still was actually paid for working on Batman Forever, as his original contract had guaranteed him the chance to do so. But during the same convention, Williams debunked this speculation, insisting that he only had a "one picture deal for Batman." There's already quite a bit of hope surrounding The Lego Batman Movie, most of which comes off the back of the huge success of 2014's The Lego Movie. But it's also helped that as well as Will Arnett returning as the animated Caped Crusader, and the cast has impressively been rounded off by Zach Galifianakis as The Joker, Michael Cera as Robin, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, Ralph Fiennes as Alfred Pennyworth, Jenny Slate as Harley Quinn, and now Billy Dee Williams as Two Face.
