The original LEGO game series was largely a construction-style game that used the formal LEGO construction sets as its basis, which was great if you were very in to LEGO, but really did not make for a video game with wide appeal. After the folks behind the games realized that – and started to license specific and interesting stories and characters for the games, it got a lot more popular. In fact it was an approach that in every respect carved out its own niche – with properties like the Harry Potter series, Indiana Jones, and Star Wars, they could practically print their own money! But when the LEGO games began to delve into the Super Hero genres things really got interesting – and a hidden secret developed with the games in the series from then on out.Well, the games may have started out as kids games, but by the time the super hero titles from both Marvel and DC comics arrived, the age range for the games seriously began to blur.
In fact the current population of gamers in the LEGO community ranges from about six to sixty! LEGO Batman 3 is the third game in the LEGO Batman series. Created by Traveler’s Tales (as all the great LEGO games are), and published by Warner Bros. Interactive in November 2014, versions of the game have been released on all of the popular platforms, which means it really does not matter what sort of gamer you are in terms of system loyalty! The use of the LEGO mechanics and world for these games is brilliant, but the decision to serialize the games? It is that approach that explains how LEGO Batman 3 is the direct sequel to LEGO Batman 2 – and what is more, that it offers a similar approach to game play mechanics somewhat unique to the series in that significant effort was made to include lots of DC Comics lore into the games. Now having said that, fan of the game series – and LEGO super hero games in general – should be aware that the massive open-world freedoms that were built into LEGO Batman 2 are sadly not quite present in 3.
That does not mean it is on a tight rail or the world is not explorable, it just means that the game does tend to follow the story rail a bit closer this time around than it did in the previous game. The game play model that the game uses is very familiar to long time players… From the super heroes to the super villains, they are all present as anticipated, and the drop-in drop-out character mechanics have also returned, which is good since they tend to make the missions both more entertaining and challenging. Now you were probably expecting that – but were you expecting celebrity cameos that tie-into the characters? We were not – but TVs Adam West makes one very early in the game play! Another element that very quickly asserts itself into the game and play is the tremendous variety of puzzles that the game uses as the primary activity and play mechanism. Puzzles that start with build kits but also extend to special ones that require the characters to wear a special suit – like Batman’s Detective Suit – that allows him to see through walls and complete hidden puzzles as well as the ones he can see.
Now we couldn’t have a Batman adventure without Robin, right? And the Robin we get in this Batman adventure is a more or less shy and needy one… If you have played the LEGO games you already know what to expect – lot of puzzles, stud collections, buying new characters to complete the character collection, and building special kits. Hunting for an collecting special Red Bricks, unlocking the Gold Bricks, and of course the mini-kits. So same-old same-old but also something new and different. For example this time around there are save points – special consoles you use to save the game that then collapse. We mentioned the personality cameos – but did we mention that they count as one of the collections? The new addition is called “Adam West in Peril” and has him appearing in special puzzle-rescue locations throughout the game. The game is split between multiple explorable hubs like the Batcave, Justice League, and Legion of Doom – which we have to admit is pretty awesome if you happen to be a fan of the comics series…
For purposes of CS action, the characters use a lot of one-liners, but even in game play there is the odd catch-phrase-humor to look forward to! The Batcave location not only features as a hub, it is also a level location – and a challenging one at that! All of the special puzzles are represented there, as well as requiring all of the special characters and abilities to complete each hub. Take all of that – and the story – and what do you get? An adventure that is packed with a lot to do and that includes the level-lock scheme, where there are areas and objects that exist in each story level that cannot be obtained until the player has unlocked late-game characters, and thus must return to complete those elements of the level! In short he game has all of the best elements of the LEGO game series – combined with touches from the mainstream comic and the non-LEGO game series as well… The problem with being an adult gamer who likes LEGO games is not the LEGO games, it’s all your friends who give you a hard time for playing them.
Personally I found the cameos in the game to be fun and even amusing, though I can sort of understand how they might not have a very wide appeal for them more serious fans and those who are seriously in to canon… The primary game play is every bit the LEGO adventure that these games always promise, and finding the solutions to each challenge and managing each puzzle – using just the right characters – is really what the essence of LEGO game play is about. I have to admit though that the first sight I had of the character collection screen – and that very massive field of locked characters – was one of the more intimidating aspects of play. Assuming that collections and stud collecting – and all of the other content is important to you as part of your game play tactics – and the characters of course – there is well over 40 hours of game play to be had here. That gives LEGO Batman 3 an Average Admission Price of $1.49 an hour. The game has an excellent Replay score, which gives it a BUY rating.
