This weekend, Lego Batman will be in Schaumburg, Ill., at the Legoland Discovery Center for a meet and greet and photo opportunities as part of the "Lego Batman Movie" Days."

We're celebrating the movie by having the Lego Batman character here plus movie-themed special activities," said David Howard, master model builder. "The Lego Batman Movie" Days are this Saturday and Sunday, and are included with admission."The largest activity will be a mural of a 'Lego Batman Movie' scene. Overall, it will be 5 feet long by 45 inches high and feature two characters from the movie. We'll actually invite guests to help by adding pieces to the mural," according to Howard. "Then, there's a building challenge where you can build tools for a Lego Batman utility belt. We'll also have a movie-themed scavenger hunt."Howard said that guests will get some swag when they come in the door, and there will be additional giveaways throughout the day. These Batman activities are in addition to the regular features at Legoland, which Howard described."Any time you visit the Legoland Discovery Center, your experience starts off with you being surrounded by hundreds of thousands of Lego bricks — including the City of Chicago Miniland.

That features models of about 25 buildings from Chicago. You can see the displays, get inspiration, and then go to the build areas. All in all there are about 6 million Lego bricks at the facility — it's a pretty impressive site." In one area, builders can construct boats to race down a waterway. Another area has a test track where guests can race their own car constructions."Then, we have two rides, a jungle gym area, which is built like a sunken pirate ship, and we have movies. Just to be clear, we're not showing "The Lego Batman Movie," but we will be showing short, approximately 15-minute films like "Clutch Powers."The movies are shown in 4D. Viewers wear 3D glasses, with a fourth dimension, wind, rain and even snow add to the experience.Legoland Discovery Center also has a Duplo Village that is a construction area with larger blocks, tailored to young builders from 2 to 5 years old.Howard said the facility caters to families with children ranging in age from 3 to 10. All children must be accompanied by an adult, and all adults must be accompanied by a child during regular hours.

Special adults-only nights for grown-up Lego fans will start April 21.Howard is one of those adult Lego fans — except, as he puts it — he gets paid to come to work every day and play with toys."Master Model Builders are hired through build competitions. When I was hired, there were three rounds to build. The first round was to build something from Chicago. I built the two lions from in front of the Art Institute. The second round was to build something to teach. I made a small mini-model of a city in the clouds. The third was a musical instrument, and I built a life-sized guitar. It was a blast — by far the coolest job interview I've ever done," Howard said. Some of Howard's favorite constructions are in the Star Wars display.Online guests can save over the walk-up admission prices, and also research the admission options and select an entry time. Advance admission starts at $14.25 per person. Walk-up admission starts at $19 per person. Other admission packages include a Lego collectible, or entrance time flexibility.
