Get ready to smash everything in sight as you play as Batman and a host of other super heroes in the latest title from Traveller’s Tales games, LEGO Batman 3. LEGO Batman 3 is a direct sequel to LEGO Batman 2, and your aim is to prevent Brainiac from using the power of the seven Lanterns to shrink Earth and add it to his collection of space objects.  Like every other LEGO title you’ll have access to a wealth of characters throughout the game, however this time it’s a little different. Like most LEGO titles you can expect the traditional formula here with everything from your hub world to levels that require multiple play throughs.  The games puzzles are familiar and involve breaking down bricks and reassembling them in order to proceed, all while collecting thousands and thousands of coloured studs.  As a LEGO fan, this tried and trusted formula is fantastic, however there are some points regarding the level design that must be mentioned. As with previous LEGO titles, you have an assortment of characters to complete a level in campaign mode.

You will have no difficulty completing a level as you always have the right characters to do the job, however some areas and collectible’s may be locked until you’ve unlocked free-play mode.  With LEGO Batman 3, rather than cycling through dozens of characters, you have access to character suits.  These suits grant you unique abilities ranging from becoming electrified to open door switches, to the ability to walk through green toxic waste or even vacuum up spare parts.  Each suit is needed to complete a certain objective in order to proceed.  This trouble sometimes can be which suit do you need to do the right task?  It’s never entirely clear and many times you will find yourself switching and trying every possible suit in order to progress.  Veteran fans will find the right suit without a hitch; however newer players may find it incredibly frustrating. LEGO Batman 3 has tried to make the game as friendly as it can for newcomers with its tutorial messages that pop up all throughout the game.

In fact, Conan O’Brien acts as a tour guide in the Bat cave and Watchtower hubs; however it can become a little graining hearing him talk every time you venture back and forth to those areas.  Also, within each level are information bricks marked with a question mark that explain what suit is needed in that instance to proceed.  It is certainly helpful when you’re trying to progress through a level, and it’s not too overdone either. Like all LEGO games collectible’s are available for you if you wish to collect them, ranging from characters to mini kits, red bricks, gold bricks and extra missions.  There is more than enough here in addition to the 12 hour campaign that will keep you busy for many more hours indeed.  You’ll of course need certain characters and abilities to access all the collectible’s which will take some time to find all 150 of them, but its certain fun and it will ensure you earn that coveted 100% completed achievement. The dialogue throughout the game and during the cut scenes is excellent.

There is a very high level of effort that has been put in to the story to make it certainly fun, all while remaining accurate to super hero fans who will certainly know what each characters strengths and weaknesses are.  I still remember Wonder Woman’s ability to deflect bullets with her wristbands, she’s still got it! Visually LEGO Batman 3 is excellent with bright colours, smooth frame rates and high levels of detail on LEGO characters.  Each of the hub worlds are also very well detailed also, so too are the menu screens and character screens also.  The next generation versions are extremely crisp and clear, something which was noticeably improved over previous generation versions.  The audio has some great music snippets that play for certain characters, such as Superman’s theme which was a nice touch.  The voice overs for the characters are also very well done. Overall LEGO Batman 3 is a fun experience for LEGO fans and super hero fanatics.  There is simply a wealth of content here and aside from the main campaign, the collectible’s will give you many hours of replayability.
