The classic Jurassic Park theme briefly plays, before the dino waves and stomps off.Leaked marketing materials from retailer Toys 'R Us previously mentioned a Lego Jurassic World game would be released sometime in 2015. Next year also sees the release of Jurassic World, the long-awaited fourth Jurassic Park film.Presumably a game would cover the events of the new film, as well as (hopefully) the classic trilogy.A range of Lego Jurassic World toy sets have already been officially announced, and will arrive on shop shelves next May, ahead of the film's launch in June.Lego Batman 3 publisher Warner Bros. A LEGO video game that makes use of DC superhero licenses sounds like a perfect source material for a game. Did we say “sounds like”? We meant “is” –there are already two previous installments that prove that LEGO Batman is a great way to spend a couple of gaming days on finishing the main storyline and then dozens of hours just having fun with the free play mode. But while the larger roster of characters and streamlined gameplay makes everything so much more expansive on paper, the actual experience of Beyond Gotham feels a little more limited compared to the Batman 2. Fortunately, the huge lineup of iconic and niche DC names popping up will make any fan happy. LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham features around 150 playable comic book heroes and villains for players to enjoy exploring the world with –and by explore we meant check out the Batcave, the Hall of Justice, and the Hall of Doom. The rest of the game is accessible through mission freeplay –which is a stepdown from the previous open world setup of the LEGO Batman 2. There are also odd WB tie-in content that just looks bizarrely out of place. LEGO video games all follow a specific format. Players take control of one of two (or even three) active characters, each with unique abilities, and will try to reach the end area of the stage after defeating all the enemies on their path as well as by making use of the character abilities to solve various Lego-themed puzzles. This also applies to Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Marvel, and even the Harry Potter titles. The game itself is a beat-em-up/platformer with puzzle elements. The story is told in a humorous style (with plenty of series specific in-jokes, as well as LEGO-related gags), and the dialogue is delivered during the actual game and during some cutscenes.
After finishing the main story mode, players will still have plenty of content to go through as LEGO games feature plenty of hidden content that is usually only accessible through free-play mode after most characters are unlocked –allowing for the use of unique skills that would open up new places to explore. For collectors, the UK release of LEGO Batman 3 comes with a Plastic Man minifig (hence the bigger box). But in general, if you love playing with the sets, then you will be happy to know that pretty much everything in the game is available in LEGO’s actual products. Of course, while the game is full of items and content made of bricks, there are plenty of stuff in the backgrounds that are not. This makes the world of LEGO’s DC universe feel like a brickified dimension where bricks and non-brick items exist together in harmony. Of course, anything that players interact with will be bricks. The main plot of the game involves having Brainiac as the main villain of the show –placing almost everything in peril that DC’s heroes and villains are forced to team up in order to defeat him.
Since this is a joke game, do not try to expect much of a delivery –the dialogue is shallow and banks heavily on jokes, though not everything is well written and much of the lines could have been wittier. Fun still remains as the bottom line for all LEGO games as players of Beyond Gotham are treated to having a wide range of options in terms of playable characters. Getting to mix and match character combinations is where all the fun is at –just because Batman’s name is on the box, you are not restricted to the Bat family for your characters. Other heroes such as Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Martian Manhunter are part of the playable roster along with many other major characters from both sides of the heroes and villains list (they also have a massive throwback to the Adam West era Batman). Also, for those of you who are fans of the CW DC TV shows (Arrow, Flash, Legends) keep an eye out for the DLC releases as well. At the same time, the inclusion of Daffy Duck, Conan O’ Brien, and Jurassic World cameos are interesting, though admittedly a little bit distracting too.
Technically, Beyond Gotham is an open world game –you get to explore various alien planets, go around locations at whim, etc. What is truly missing here is the single massive map like the New York City in LEGO Marvel. This is a pretty huge disappointment for fans since being able to run around Gotham is one of the best things that the game could have offered to fans. Sure, the title does say Beyond –but we hardly get to run around Central, Coast, Star, Metropolis, or any of the other major DC universe locations. If you are a comic book fan, then LEGO Marvel may be a better fit; but if you just love DC in general, then passing up on Beyond Gotham would be a major loss as it has a bigger roster of characters than Batman 2. Also, the graphical upgrade as well as the gameplay tweaks on this third game makes it so much more convenient to play (we love the fact that you can now swap alternate suits on the fly with a single tap of a button –which is such a huge timesaver that should be implement in all LEGO games).
