Jimmy Osmond pays tribute to mentor Andy Williams with CD, concerts PROVO — Jimmy Osmond doesn't sit still. If he's not recording something, he's writing a children's book; and if he's not busy with those projects, he's on the road performing. "It's just the way I am," Osmond said during a recent phone interview. "I've always been kind of a crazy guy." Osmond is celebrating 50 years in show business, promoting the CD "Moon River and Me: A Tribute to Andy Williams," a collection released earlier this year of songs originally sung by Williams, and the concerts that go with the compilation. "This is a tribute to an amazing man who was my boss, my mentor, my neighbor and my friend," Osmond said. "I've always loved him and his singing. It's a pleasure to do this." The youngest Osmond in the famous singing family, Jimmy Osmond was on stage at the age of 3, the first in his family to receive a gold record at the age of 5 (for "My Little Darling"). He's enjoyed years of performing, both with his brothers (and sister Marie Osmond) and solo.

According to the official Jimmy Osmond website, he is the youngest person ever to have a hit single ("Long-haired Lover from Liverpool") that made its way to the top of the United Kingdom charts and stayed for weeks. "I was kind of the family mascot, always the bad apple," Osmond quipped. "I was the youngest and the first Elvis impersonator in my family at the age of 6!" He currently owns the Andy Williams Moon River Performing Arts Center in Branson, Missouri, and lives in Provo with his family. "Moon River and Me" features highlights of the past 50 years of Williams' songs, from "Danny Boy" to "Charade" to "Up, Up and Away" and "Dear Heart," Osmond said. In addition to the tribute CD, Osmond also keeps Williams' legacy alive by continuing his traditional Christmas spectacular. The CD, released in May, is not anything but a tribute to Williams, Osmond said. "I'm really excited about this," he added. The concerts — which start with two nights in Las Vegas at the Suncoast Hotel and Casino — kick off a tour with stops throughout the United States and the United Kingdom and includes additional songs and bits from Osmond productions.

"Andy taught me to do variety," Osmond said. Osmond has performed in musical theater, including playing Teen Angel in “Grease” on the West End, Billy Flinn in the play “Chicago,” Captain Hook in the British pantomime “Peter Pan,” and many more. Over the years, he has also appeared on numerous television shows and reality programs, including, “Fame,” “Love Boat,” ITV’s “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!,” as well as “Celebrity Family Fortunes,” “Celebrity Come Dine With Me,” “Popstar to Operastar,” and most recently, “Celebrity Master Chef.” He is an award-winning producer for BBC, PBS, ABC and The Disney Channel, according to his website. He said he's proudest, though, of keeping Williams' legacy alive. "Nobody sings like Andy," he said. "Producing and performing 'Moon River and Me' is the most wonderful way I can imagine to celebrate my 50th year in show business." The show is the only tribute show authorized by the Andy Williams estate.

Pit against Ben Affleck’s hulking sourpuss in Zack Snyder’s doomsday vision of Batman, Lego Bats is much preferable company.

Will Arnett, who perfected his cartoonishly menacing low rumble whisper in an over-the-top villain role on “30 Rock,” is a gas as Batman, whom he first played in a small, but memorable role in 2014’s delightful “The Lego Movie.”Here he’s Gotham’s egomaniac rock star savior, quick to thwart his foes, save the city and drop off merch for the wee ones at the local orphanage. But when he returns to his Batcave at night he’s all alone, reheating lobster dinners and watching “Jerry Maguire” by himself in his garish Bat Theater.Everybody needs somebody, the movie argues, even the “Batman” villains. As played with a needy, attention-starved zeal by Zach Galifianakis, the Joker doesn’t so much want to bring chaos to Gotham as he just wants Batman’s attention. His heart is broken when Bats tells him, “You don’t mean anything to me. The Lego Batman Movie” sets out to give Batman a hand and teach him the value of friendship and teamwork. He partners with Robin (Michael Cera), Batgirl (Rosario Dawson) and his trusty butler, Alfred (Ralph Fiennes), begrudgingly at first, to take on the Joker and a collection Batman baddies, both known (the Penguin, Poison Ivy) and unknown (Peanut Butter and Jelly Man?).

(It’s worth noting Doug Benson does a great send-up of Tom Hardy’s muffled Bane voice.)The joke-per-minute ratio is as sky-high as a “Naked Gun” or “Scary Movie” sequel, with most landing successfully. Things dip a bit in the movie’s midsection, but pick up as it barrels toward its finale, which opens the floodgates to a parade of characters from the Warner Bros. vaults.First-time director Chris McKay preserves the good-natured, lighthearted and whip-smart tone of “The Lego Movie,” and the script (credited to five writers) crackles with wit and fanboy know-how. There’s even “Deadpool”-style fourth wall shattering when Arnett opens the film by commenting on the opening titles and production logos and says as the film opens, “Black. All important movies start with a black screen.”You wouldn’t automatically think animated Lego pieces would make for such effective cinematic tools, but the nostalgic charm of the childhood mainstays coupled with their simplistic, emotive features — there’s something refreshingly innocent and endearing about those round dot eyes and curved yellow faces — make Legos work surprisingly well on-screen.“
