Initially, this was to be a no LEGO Christmas. I know, I know. My sons are 5 and 6 years-old, but already we seem to have so much LEGO that we could fill a baby wading pool. But, not to be, because one of LEGO’s key releases in late 2008 in Australia was the Agents line. It is a nice line, I am getting a bit sick of the movie associated titles and the slightly more generic modern spy theme appealed. But, the crunch came only 3 days before Christmas. I’d informed my mother (the kid’s grandma) that we’d be steering clear of LEGO, but she was pushing for a birthday gift, my eldest turns 7 in early January. I said I’d look at his Christmas list again and let her know, well, the eldest had re-written his list it contained two items. That is right, he’d scaled back a full list to just two items: a remote controlled helicopter and Agents LEGO. Next to Agents LEGO were five big stars, when asked what this meant he said it was so Santa would know that was all he really wanted. to report an issue. I called back Grandma to let her know Agents LEGO would be a hit. Grandma called back two hours later to inform me that all the major department stores in the Melbourne Metropolitan region had sold out of LEGO. She’d managed to get Mission 5 from an online store, and that was great because it would be there in time for my son’s birthday. But, I’d just changed my mind about the whole no LEGO for Christmas deal. So, my two boys and I headed into our small country town (pop. 7000) toy store to have a "final look" and make our lists. I was hoping a few of the older Mars Mission sets were still in stock. We pull outside and it looks like the post-Christmas sale. There are red signs everywhere that say, "20% of everything". The financial crisis has reached the toy merchants of Central Victoria. It went from good to even better when my boys ran from the corner of the store to inform me that there was Agents LEGO. It appears the store had placed an order that arrived only the week before.

It then went from even better to excellent when my son produced Mission 6: Mobile Command Center. The ultimate in the Agents LEGO series sat before us, when most of our most local metropolis was sold out. And it was 20% off! Needless to say, it had the desired impact on Christmas morning. So, what did we think? Continue over the fold for a full review Mission 6: Mobile Command Center is all that LEGO that comes in a damn big box should be. It has a good 6-8 hours of building time, many different components to build and extra bonus features to excite the young children. My lesson with this set, which has a recommended age of 8-14 years, is that age recommendations are sometimes useful to follow. My two boys were fine building the entire Command Center with usual support from me, but this is a big piece that has some fragility to it and I found myself reattaching the flip-top roof section on several occasions and we also had several incidents of the truck which carries the Command Center rig falling off tables so that it was rebuilt 3 times in one day.

As I write tonight, I have allowed Dr. Inferno and his evil band to win the day. That said, the fact we had so much building to do meant that on Christmas morning we could build the smaller vehicles and save the Command Center for a morning after all the festivities had subsided. A hard thing for young kids to do, but a sane option, rather than trying to build it amid the Christmas Day family craziness. My favorite aspect of this set is that all five agent vehicles (plane, jet ski, boat and two cars) all fit within the Mobile Command Center. The compactness, the use of space and the whole design reminds me of one of my all time favorite cartoons Battle of the Planets. They had a similar concept going, where all their smaller units fitted within a larger one. However, so far the Lego Agents set hasn’t turned into a fiery phoenix. I’ll be honest, the whole two facial features thing that Lego is doing these days is a bit weird. For those who haven’t seen it they LEGO heads often come with two opposing faces which are usually neither happy or sad, usually more angry and afraid.

It is the one thing I don’t really get into, especially for younger kids. Just reinforces standard stereotypes I reckon. I was happy with the simple smiley face – why not bring it back – worked for my Space Lego men. That said, I’m looking forward to getting more familiar with the Agents LEGO team, my son has Mission 4 on lay-by and Grandma has Mission 5 lined up for his birthday.
