Free next day Click+Collect* Select All Posts By This User I've been using (or rather attempting) to use my Pi for XBMC, which hasn't really worked all that well, it was getting far too hot, as well as where I was trying to run it, it simply couldn't stream anything. So I tried to modify my current case (Built-To-Spec black Raspberry Pi case) which went fine, up to the point where I broke it.. I tried to weld it back together with acrylic glue (JB Weld #3 I believe) and that didn't work all that well.. I think I didn't have the surfaces meeting each other perfectly. Anyways, I didn't want to spend hours trying to fix the case, when I could simply build something out of LEGO, that would be much more pretty, and much more suited for a fan. Many of you may know I don't really like typing much in my build logs, I usually let the pictures do the talking for me.

For starters, I tested the fan to see what voltage it would start to spin up with, that was 2v (+/- .05v). I decided to use the 5v pins on the GPIO instead of the 3.3v, simply because I didn't have the resistors to knock it down from 3.3v to 2.0v. I didn't have a single 1w 25Ω resistor, so I had to use 2x 47Ω resistors in parallel to get a similar effect, I didn't have 50Ω so I had to use the closest thing I had. Now, onto the exciting part, LEGO! Not much can be really said about it, so I'll let the pictures do all the talking now. The rough layout of whats going to go where: How the rear fan intakes air, I thought it looked fairly cool, that's why I did it this way. The fan is fully mounted, flipped 180° to make it easier to run the wires to the pins. The micro USB wire has a hole to emerge from! Resistors are soldered in place! A few of the top supports are in place, as well as the connector is on the proper pins Before the Pi gets covered completely:

Now, the fan will power up automatically under the default Raspbain Wheezy for the Pi. However under XMBC I can't get the fan to power up. Any help in that area would be greatly appreciated CPUMotherboardGraphicsGraphicsi7 2600k Gigabyte Z68X-UD5-B3 eVGA GTX580 eVGA GTX580 RAMHard DriveHard DriveCoolingCorsair Vengence Samsung 840 Evo WD1001FALS Phobya UC-2 OSMonitorPowerCaseWindows 10 Pro 22" LG HX1000 Corsair 900D MouseDeathAdder View all CPUMotherboardGraphicsRAMi3 3220 S1200BTSR onboard KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G Hard DriveHard DriveHard DriveHard DrivePatriot Inferno 60gb 8x WD5002ALX 4x ST2000DM001 2x WD10EALS 2x WD10EARS Hard DriveOSPowerCaseWD5000AAKS Windows Server 2008 R2 Antec TP550 RPC-4116 OtherOtherAreca ARC-1222 Dell Perc5/i View all CPUMotherboardGraphicsRAMi5 750 Gigabyte H55N-USB3 Asus 5770 Direct CU II 8GB Kingston HyperX Hard DriveCoolingOSPower250GB Momentus XT Accelero S1 Plus Windows 7 SilverStone ST45SF CaseSilverstone FT03B-MINI View all
