It’s about sussing out substance as well as style: Which is the best recline for immersing yourself inside the latest David Mitchell book, for example, or just how wide should its seat be? At West Elm, these essential equations rank along with cosy fabrics, downfill and, of course, back and arm supports, too. “A combination of all these things will quickly make an occasional chair the best seat in the house,” says spokesperson Kendall Coleman. The prescription for the right chair is often determined by how it will be used in our homes. Steer clear of oversized chairs if the space is tight, suggests Coleman, or one that’s high in style but lacking comfort if it is supposed to be a fixture in a reading nook.

Coleman adds the example of an updated club chair with unexpected details such as the trends for a pop of colour through contrasting piping. “The result is a chair that is both modern and timeless,” she continues, adding that legs should not be forgotten. “[They] add just as much personality to the design as the fabric or silhouette.” So whether it’s high-backed or low-slung, there are plenty of chairs to suit the occasion.
