La-Z-Boy Inc.'s profit and sales fell for the second consecutive quarter, hurt by sluggish demand. "While the consumer environment for the past six months has been somewhat choppy," Chief Executive Kurt L. Darrow said in a press release that company officials expect sales to pick up in the holiday season. As in the previous quarter, Mr. Darrow said, customers made larger purchases on average, driven by custom orders and in-home design sales, even if overall sales were slightly down. Best known for its namesake recliners, the Monroe, Mich.-based company has been trying to revamp operations, exiting the hospitality business and moving wood furniture production overseas. It targets 400 stores, averaging $4 million in sales, over five years--what it calls its 4-4-5 strategy. In the most recent period, it bought four stores in Canada--its first company-owned stores in the country. The proximity of some new stores, however, has cut into sales at established locations. Last quarter, for example, company officials blamed half of the 1.9% decline in written same-store sales to this so-called cannibalization.
