It was started in January by Jas Bagniewski, co-founder of Groupon UK;

Joe Moore, a former logistics expert at Deloitte; James Fryer, a veteran of the mattress industry; and Kuba Wieczorek, a former creative executive at Channel 4. Eve manufactures a single type of mattress in several sizes and shapes. It is made from memory foam and latex, which “is suitable for 99pc of body types”, according to Mr Wieczorek. The company hopes to win customers from top-selling memory foam mattress maker Tempur by selling its products for a fraction of the price. “We think it’s ludicrous that people are spending £2,000 on a Tempur mattress,” said Mr Wieczorek, who is selling a kingsize Eve mattress for £700. Eve’s website features the tagline: “Somebody’s going to lose their Temper." The company is also hoping to “pull up” Ikea customers by manufacturing Eve mattresses in the same quirky dimensions used by the Swedish retailer, as well as standard sizes. The Eve mattress flat-packs, reducing delivery costs for the start-up To encourage customers to take a chance on the mattress, Eve offers free returns within 100 days, as well as free delivery.

“You can’t expect someone to make a decision within five minutes of lying down,” said Mr Wieczorek. The team went through many iterations before finding the perfect mattress, he added. "That was the most stressful time for the business." Eve has been self-funded so far but is about to close a seed-round of funding worth an estimated £600,000. Investors include FJ Labs, the venture-capital fund behind Viagogo and Zesty, and DN Capital, which backed Shazam. The capital will be spent on sales and marketing. “You should start seeing Eve branding by the Spring,” said Mr Wieczorek. Eve founders (from left) Jas Bagniewski, Joe Moore, James Fryer and Kuba Wieczorek Eve, which manufactures its products on demand in Lancashire, has sold 30 mattresses to date despite spending no money on publicity. “This means we are already profitable,” added Mr Wieczorek. The firm will expand into Europe by the end of the year, focusing first on Germany, where consumers “love high-end memory foam mattresses and love British-made products”, according to Mr Wieczorek.

“Buying a mattress is a nightmare all over the world. It’s a universal issue.” The US is also a target market for the start-up.How to Buy an Eco Friendly Mattress Flickr/Agent Magenta/CC BY 2.0This is a guest post from Yo Yehudi, who is somewhat of an expert on mattresses having worked with Mattress Online one of the UK’s leading Mattress Suppliers for a number of years.What to look for in an “Eco-Friendly” Mattress? If you’re looking to get a new mattress, but want to minimize your impact on the environment, you may have a tricky task ahead. A few obvious drawbacks can’t be entirely avoided (transport of a large item, for example), but many can be mitigated or reduced through careful shopping. The not so good: Beds and mattresses are large -- and typically, the better quality they are, the heavier and thicker they are, meaning there’ll be a lot of carbon-emission generating transport.Easiest solution: Try a roll-up mattress.These mattresses can be either pure foam or a mix of foam and springs -- but until you open the vacuum-packaging, they’re very compact and much easier to transport.

Of course, with fire retardant chemicals and VOCs thrown into the mix, this raises another quandary, but if you are going to purchase a foam mattress anyway, roll ups are going to be more transport-friendly, regardless.Similarly, several flat-packed bedframes can be transported in the same amount of space as a single large box spring. As Treehugger has pointed out before, eco-credentials aren’t regulated well, so take ‘green’ claims with a grain of salt and read into them carefully.Materials on the Market: fort: Usually pretty good at easing pressure spots, but can retain built up-body heat.Eco-Friendly?: Avoid memory foam if possible. Natural latexes are sustainably made from Hevea Brasiliensis (Rubber Tree) sap, while synthetic latex is made from petrochemicals.
