They may contain full or half glass panels as well as retractable or fixed screens. Over time, the glass in a storm door may crack or break due to sharp impacts by people or objects. Fortunately, it is fairly easy to replace a broken glass panel and restore the look of your door. Examine your storm door from the interior. The glass is held in place by a metal frame, which is supported by two vertical retainer strips. Look for these retainer strips on either side of the glass so you'll understand how the glass is installed. Insert a flat-head screwdriver between the retainer strip and the adjacent frame. Start about 1/2 inch from the top of the glass panel and pry the strip away from the glass a little bit at a time. Work carefully to avoid damaging the retainer strips, as you will need to reuse them. Repeat Step 2 to remove the retainer strips from the other edge of the glass. You should have a partner ready to hold the glass panel in place once these strips are removed.

Remove the metal framed panel from the door. Use caution to avoid cuts from the glass. You may wish to wear heavy gloves during this process. Take the frame and remaining glass to a glass supplier or hardware store. They will be able to size the replacement panel based on the dimensions of the broken unit. It is critical that you choose either tempered or laminated glass for your storm door. Not only is this a code requirement throughout the entire US, but it is also much safer for your family. Tempered or laminated glass will break into small pieces that are much less dangerous than the large, sharp shards of the past. Pull the metal frame off of the old panel and place it onto the new one. This frame can be removed by hand, one section at a time, and fitted around the edge of the glass. Hold the glass panel in place over the opening in the door. Have a partner keep the glass still while you reinstall the retainer strips. Slide the first retainer strip into the tracks along one side of the opening.

The strip should enter the track at the middle of the panel. Hold the strip at a 45 degree angle to the glass, and keep the side with the writing facing towards you. Push the strip up the glass a bit at a time until the top of the strip is at the top of the glass. Repeat this process to install the second strip along the opposite side.
