We admit we weren’t convinced at first but we give Hyundai props for stepping up their game with vehicles like the Genesis Coupe—a car that put the automaker on our radar with growing aftermarket support and also a successful drift campaign. For the Veloster, Hyundai’s been trying to tap into the tuner scene further by displaying modified examples at the past two SEMA shows. Initially, the Veloster buzz fell on deaf ears to many, but last year brought forth the turbo model. It was a step in the right direction for Hyundai and caught the attention of car builders, like John Pangilinan. John’s no stranger to the scene; he’s won awards for his past SEMA car builds from Ford and Scion, and he can now add Hyundai to the list.

His Veloster isn’t going to win any races or take home best of show at the next Wekfest, but it’s a well-rounded street car and a good example of how you can tackle these Velosters. “The goal was to build a solid street car that would be functional enough for daily driving, yet stand out on show room floors,” he explained. “I am fortunate to be able to work with the top brands so I focused on quality over quantity.”2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo TS Designs Fender Flares Out of the box, the Veloster Turbo is a decent commuter with enough power to get around the city. Knowing that, John left the motor stock except for a couple bolt-ons and concentrated on the blank canvas in front of him. He enlisted the help of illustrator Jon Sibal. As many of you know, Mr. Sibal is the shit. He’s the man behind countless automotive renderings, such as our own Garage FR-S project. Jon didn’t want to detract too much from the original Veloster styling—something that was already pretty outspoken in the first place.

So he simply added more aggressive fenders. TS Designs was responsible for rebuilding the fenders according to Sibal’s rendering, then the entire car was resprayed mint green—a color inspired by Nike colors. Next, the chassis received only the best—Rays Xtreme57 wheels, Brembo brakes with color-matched calipers, KW coilovers and tons of Whiteline goodies to keep the suspension tight. Inside, John kept his street theme going with comfortable Recaro seats and an award-winning stereo system built by BP Autosound. Only a couple years into the market, the Veloster isn’t trending like crazy, but we expect more projects to surface as cars like this minty fresh Veloster inspire more enthusiasts.2013 Hyundai Veloster - Mint Condition 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Occupation Public Relations manager for Formula Drift, Illest and Sanctiond Engine AEM cold-air intake; Footwork & Chassis KW coilovers with ARK Performance springs; Whiteline 26mm front and 18mm rear sway bars, heavy-duty end-links, anti-lift kit and 14mm camber adjusting bolt kit

This year is no different, as Hyundai just revealed their third SEMA car this year, a Hyundai Veloster Turbo with some serious performance modifications.Hyundai turned to the specialists at Blood Type Racing (BTR) to create an insane one-off Veloster Turbo for their display. The BTR Veloster has a sinister appearance, with a wicked black-on-red color scheme. BTR began with the “Carbon Black” paint color, and added red racing stripes, red SSR Professor wheels, red mirror caps, and what BTR calls “demon eye” projector headlamps. A full SoCal Garage Works carbon fiber kit that gives the hatch a widebody stance, and the hood and hatch are also carbon fiber.Under the skin, the BTR Veloster puts down some serious power, with a quoted “more than 500 hp” from the Veloster’s highly modified 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. The modifications made to the powerplant are extensive, including a set of fully forged internals, a Devil’s Own methanol and water injection system, a full intake manifold and exhaust system, and a large Garrett turbocharger.
