Lambo is short for Lamborghini, and these doors were used on the Lamborghini Countach, Diablo and Murcielago models. Scissor doors are so called because instead of opening out like a traditional car door, they open upward, pivoting at the front of the door just behind the fender, just like the blade of a scissors. While many think that scissor doors were a styling exercise, they were actually necessary due to the fact the Countach has such poor rear visibility. To reverse the Countach, it was necessary for the driver to open the door and lean out to see behind the car. In order to safely operate the car this way, without fear of the open door hitting anything while the driver was looking rearward, the decision was made to pivot the door upward instead of outward.

The scissor door tradition continued with the Diablo and Murcielago. On aftermarket Lambo Door kits like those made by Vertical Doors Inc. the doors must be opened outward before they can be raised, in order to clear the door frame. Vertical Doors, Inc. Lambo doors open 12-18 inches in the usual manner until they stop. The bottom of the door can then be grasped and the door lifted vertically. Each door is fitted with a gas shock to assist and ease the door opening effort. When fully open, the back portion of the door is usually higher than the roof of the vehicle. Some aftermarket kits allow the doors to open as far as 130 degrees. The Lambo door kit does not replace the doors, only the front door hinges. To install them the front fenders must be removed and possibly the front bumper or fascia. The new vertical hinge installs in place of the factory hinges, and minor trimming to the rear of the front fenders is usually required to clear the new hinge. The edges of the doors may also have to be trimmed.
