The name: Edwin Shoemaker. The invention: the La-Z-Boy recliner.Mr. Shoemaker, a Michigan farmboy whose decision to tinker in novelty furniture made him the co-owner of one of the country's most successful furniture companies, died Sunday in his winter home in Sun City, Ariz. He was 90.A lifelong resident of Monroe County, Mich., he was born on a farm a quarter mile from his cousin and business partner, the late Edward M. Knabusch.Mr. Shoemaker's family expected him to help run the family farm, but he had a different idea.

A self-taught engineer, he decided to join his cousin to create a furniture business."He wasn't a farmer. He wanted to do something more, and he needed an outlet for his engineering talents," said John Case, vice president of marketing for La-Z-Boy, which is still based in Monroe. "His cousin Ed was the marketing and sales personality, and Ed Shoemaker was the quiet engineer behind the scenes."In 1928, Mr. Shoemaker came up with the blueprint for a reclining porch chair by hinging the seat and back together so they moved in concert. He and his cousin took the idea to a department store in Toledo. The buyer thought they had a good product but wanted them to upholster the chair for indoor use. They did, and the chairs began to sell later that year.At the time, nothing else like it existed, and Mr. Shoemaker and his cousin were on their way to building an enormously successful enterprise. By 1961, annual sales were at a comfortable $1.5 million.Still, Mr. Shoemaker felt the need to improve his product.

Until that time, consumers had to use an Ottoman or a footstool if they wanted to pick their feet up. To remedy that, Mr. Shoemaker invented a footrest inside the chair that could be activated by a handle. The Reclina-Rocker was born. The second product sold briskly and by 1970, La-Z-Boy had $50 million in annual sales, Case said. Since its inception, more than 50 million Americans have bought a La-Z-Boy chair, he said.As the engineering mind behind the business, Mr. Shoemaker was responsible for more than 30 patents the company held. In addition to the recliner, he designed the company machinery, reclining love seats and swivel rockers, and refined his original products."I don't think he ever appreciated the size and scope of what it had become," said Case. "He would have just said, `We've done pretty good.' "Mr. Shoemaker served as company vice chairman and executive vice president of engineering for 70 years. He attended all the company board meetings, either in person or via a conference call, until this month.

On the day he died, Mr. Shoemaker went out to dinner with friends, afterwards fell asleep in his recliner at home, and died.He is survived by two sons, Dale and Robert; a daughter, Mary Kaye Johnston; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending. New Owner Demolishes O.j. I’ve never seen this one before so I thought I’d post it anyway, maybe you’ve missed it, too. Wayne’s Bee’s—which is a honey bee removal service located in Lantana, Florida—filmed an incredible sight: a massive yellow jacket nest fused to both a La-Z-Boy-style chair and the floor carpeting.

In a weird way, it’s almost like a work of art. I could totally see this being displayed in a museum like some sort of fantasy collaboration between Damien Hirst and Mike Kelley. This all went down in Hobe Sound, Florida. Posted by Tara McGinley Our apologies, the content you requested cannot be located. using the Search box above.
