I bought two of these locks recently and both keysets opened both sets of locks. Am I missing something? Probably because they had the same key ID. You can rekey it with an old key of the same brand. Can I change the direction that the key turns to lock and unlock the door knob so that the direction is the same as to lock/unlock the deadbolt? Kwikset does offer a tool to flip the cylinder on the knob called a cylinder removal tool. Please contact your local Home Depot lock department for cylinder removal tool availability. Kwikset Model # 991J 15 SMT CP cylinder can be troubleshooted with the following steps. 1st: Insert the last key that you tried to program to the unit. 2nd: Pull the key out a notch at a time and try to turn it at the same time to the quarter turn position to the right. 3rd: If the key turns to the quarter turn position, insert your smart key tool and then remove your key. 4th: Remove the key and Insert the key that came with the box and turn it back to vertical at 12 o'clock. 5th: Then re-do the re-keying steps that came with the box. If the steps do not work, there is a device called a RESET CRADLE. The device is generally found at Home Depot. The reset cradle will reset your cylinder and they can also re-key the unit for you as well. Does anyone know if these are compatible to replace Design House locks? I realize I am likely ove... It really depends more on the door and the existing cut out for the existing locks.
To be sure, you should remove the existing lock (or at least loosen it up) so that you can measure the existing hole. For a deadbolt, the hole should be 1-1/2" diameter. For the knob, the hole should be 2-1/8". The door should be between 1-3/8" and 1-3/4" thick. Also, the center of the hole for the knob needs to be between 2-3/8" and 2-3/4". If all of these are met, the Kwikset lock-set should work. If you need further info, there are technical specifications on the installation guide on the Home Depot website. Does this set come the required function and smart key to re-key the lock?We changed all of our locks to one key with the included set. Which key do I use to rekey the lock a second or third time in the future? You use the current key that works in the lock. So, if you have already re-keyed the door. Use the current key that opens the door in conjunction with the "smart-key" that will allow you to go through the re-key process with a new key.
