MUMBAI: Maha Rashtra Apex, a holding company of the Manipal Group, posted a loss last year. Its net worth has been completely eroded. Yet, the company has been a hot favourite on Dalal Street in the last month or so. In fact, the stock has been locked at the 5% upper circuit daily since December 9 with no sellers, leaving investors scratching their heads. For those looking for reasons behind the stock's stellar performance, the answer lies in the successful run of Sheela Foam, maker of mattress brand Sleepwell, since its listing on December 9.
Maha Rashtra does not have a stake in Sheela Foam but is a shareholder in an unlisted rival Kurlon, which is expected to list in the next one year or so. Maha Rashtra shares have surged over 200% since December 9. Maha Rashtra Apex, an NBFC which ceased to operate in 1999, holds about 38% in Kurlon. It is currently valued at Rs 80 crore as per Wednesday's closing of Rs 64.35. Sheela Foam's current market cap is Rs 4,756 crore. Sheela Foam reported a revenue of Rs 1,265 crore for FY16 while Kurlon's revenue for 2014-15 was Rs 770 crore. Maha Rashtra Apex posted revenues of Rs 1.1 crore for FY16 with a net loss of Rs 23 lakh. The company's net worth was completely eroded several years back. As on March 31, 2016, it reported a negative net worth of Rs 75 crore. Kurlon has nine manufacturing units across five states -Karnataka, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Odisha.
