Refurbished cabinets can be modern, stylish and cost efficient. Much of the kitchen wall space is consumed by cabinetry, but if the cabinets aren’t your style, you won’t truly enjoy the space; if they’re worn or dated, they can detract from the home’s value and its appeal. However, replacing them may cost thousands of dollars. When grooved cabinet doors are the issue, look at ways to cover them instead of settling for what you have or forking out a ton of cash for new ones. Filled Grooves Not only may outdated cabinets with shallow, routed designs or etchings detract from a kitchen’s value and appeal, but the narrow ruts also can be a grunge trap. Over time, thin grooves build up with grease, grime and other expected kitchen crud. To avoid having to regularly scrape out the buildup, and to give the cupboards a smoother, slab finish, scour clean the grooves -- one last time -- and seal them with wood filler. After sanding smooth the filled grooves, consider a paint color, such as white or dark gray, for a fresh and more modern vibe.

Framed Doors If the wide, deep or curvy profile grooves around your cabinet doors don’t jibe with your sense of style, use an overlay frame on the facing to achieve a different look. A wide, 1/4-inch-thick frame glued over the indented design may be all you need to upgrade the cupboards’ appearance. With basic moldings hiding the furrows, the cabinets take on the look of recessed panel doors. Paint the frames and doors using the same color, for an updated finish. Laminate Panels When you’re after a streamlined feel, laminate may be the answer. Laminate panels aren’t very difficult to work with, but you have to remove all the doors and lay them flat to apply the panels, so the process can be a bit time consuming. A paint roller makes quick work of the contact-cement application on the back of the panel and the door facing, and dowels help keep the panels off the doors until you have the tacky panel lined up with the door front. Predrill holes for new drawer pulls and knobs to help avoid splintered or damaged laminate.

Wallpaper Style-savvy homeowners have used textured wallpaper to disguise less-than-perfect walls, but wallpaper isn't just for walls. The paper dries tight and helps hide small dents, dings and scratches in poorly finished drywall and most wood or laminate surfaces. If your cabinets have a narrow, shallow-routed design, you may not need to fill the grooves before hanging the wallpaper on the door faces; try a sample run -- which you can peel off if need be -- on one door before setting to work on the lot. Textured wallpaper comes in assorted colors and patterns, but a paintable version allows you to customize the cabinetry to your space. : Making Laminate Countertopsjennasue: Office Cabinet Refinishjennasue: Office Cabinet Refinish Photo Credits Stockbyte/Stockbyte/Getty Images Suggest a Correction Most often, it is possible to renovate a kitchen, adding modern surfaces, doors, drawer fronts, etc to produce a fabulous new kitchen, without needlessly discarding items such as the units, plumbing, gas and electric connections, thereby saving $1,000s compared to redesigning and installing everything from scratch.
