Drake Announced the Release Date for 'More Li...As a topic, ‘Sneaker Greatest Lists/Best Of’s’ are always going to be subjective as hell, sneakers are very personal, lived in, and coveted in equal, individual measure. There is nothing more divisive or debatable (politics or football are excluded obviously) than the individual opinion stating preference on choice of wearables, in this case sneakers, chosen from an endlessly limitless range, with some models spanning decades, surviving popular trends and being ultimately symbolic stylistically, of status and a very unique form of self expression. Sneakers have affectionately grown to represent amongst other things, childhood, youthful transition, cultural identity, and of course that all important swing of social peer acceptence and approval. Sneakerheads, let’s just say it, are an incredibly passionate and vocal bunch, especially about their own choice of sneakers. Sneaker lists are always going to fall somewhat short, or at least require too many categories, to appease and/or make fair game and sense, most will disappoint.

So naturally, we were hugely intrigued when Neal Heard, author, sneaker, football, smiths (the band) fan had announced he was curating such an exhibit supported by e-commerce retailers Lyst and the Archivist’s Gallery, with contributions from a highly respectable selection of industry & sneaker community figures, thoughts that sprang to mind really were what shoes will the selection omit either by choice, necessity, neglect or irrelevance. It seemed a daunting task to do seriously, an impossibility to remain impartial and to judge, select each sneaker to create an equal meritable criteria upon where this list would follow some legacy and harmonious order. And now it’s here, come the opening night preview, the final 25 greatest of all time sneaker selections were revealed (voted by general and industry minds) with the selections from DJ Kish Kash, Adidas collector Robert Brooksy, Size & Footpatrol heavyweight Paul Ruffles, and Neal himself amongst others, the selection is very good, and actually made sense.

The 25 GOAT list was well thought out, and put together with only some minor grumbles heard from guests about particular sneakers being placed too high/low or some sibling/alternative models making the cut instead of others. and while no Yeezy’s were to be seen anywhere in this list, much relief to some, the selection had it all, technical, cultural and style/era signifiance. Disappointingly, there wasn’t a single sneaker we felt was not deserved of its place, and that’s a good thing, no obvious omissions and a few surprise but worthy inclusions. The top 3 result? Well for Bronze, we have the Nike Air Force 1 (3) , for silver the Converse Chuck Taylor (2), and Gold – the adidas Stan Smith (1). We did ponder with notable exception that the ultra modern adidas Ultraboost coming in at no:10 proves just how good adidas are doing right now, when 1-9 are all archive worthy/vintage/retro sneaker classics, some even decades old models. It’s the only new silhouette in the top 10 list that’s maybe, less than 3 years old.

The exhibit is rounded off by various sneaker displays with ‘Inside the mind of a sneakerhead’ showcasing rare and hugely sought after gems, and adding great context to the exhibit is the ‘Chronology of Sneakers’ with the amazing selection of archived print material showcasing the history of various brands at various stages of growth from as early as the 1970’s, and how much sneakers and product communication has really changed throughout the decades. The Guardian has listed the 25 Goat list here. But we recommend if you are in London, go see this exhibit. It’s a digest snapshot of sneaker culture taking you from early beginnings, childhood beaters, sneaker grails, brand stories (and if you are like us) right back to why modern-day footwear obsessives is where it is. It’s just a shame, British Knights, Troop, or Avia’s didn’t make the grade… ! The 25 Greatest Sneakers Of All Time Exhibit Dates: 26th January – 5th February 2017 Where: The Archivist’s Gallery, Unit V Reliance Wharf, N1 5ET
