One of my friends heard that line last week in a radio promo for a Martin Luther King Day mattress sale.

This friend — a Chicagoan who recently moved to California, which is where he heard the ad — was so irked by the brazen appropriation of the signature line from Dr. King's famous speech that he posted it on Facebook with the comment, "I'm embarrassed for my species."There was a time when the commercialization of MLK Day was close to taboo.Memorial Day and Veterans Day were long ago confiscated by retailers — how better to honor our troops than a used-car blowout? — but MLK Day retained a certain sobriety. It was an official holiday, but not a day to binge on sales in the name of an assassinated civil rights leader. But one sad truth about our species: If there is a buck to be made, it will be made. Many retailers, it's worth noting, are still wary of calling their MLK sales by that name.I recently read an article on where to find MLK weekend discounts. The story pointed out that some retailers shy away from the name on the grounds that "associating consumerism with the civil rights movement isn't an attractive strategy for retailers."

Those savvy sellers prefer terms like "three-day sale."And yet there remain others who don't play coy, like the car dealership whose current ad was posted by a Twitter friend. The offer, valid only on Monday, is for 20 percent off any service, plus a complimentary multi-point inspection. The ad comes with a nice photo of King, though not as nice as the image on the website of an equally unabashed online deals aggregator."Martin Luther King Day is January 19, 2015," the site informs its readers. "Here are all the best Martin Luther King sales, deals, and coupon codes to save at over 50 stores. The best MLK sales won't last long, so hurry!" The accompanying portrait, done in the style of the famous Obama "Hope" poster, depicts King's face above the word "Dream."All of this might, in my Facebook friend's words, make a person embarrassed for our species, but it had a slightly different effect on me.When I read his post about the MLK mattress sale, I realized there was something I needed to do.

I'm sure that once, a long time ago, I read the entire "I Have a Dream" speech, and I've often heard snippets coming out of the radio, usually while padding around the house on some Martin Luther King Day.But it wasn't until I saw my friend's mattress sale post that it hit me: I'd never heard the whole speech, from opening line through its famous closing incantationThank God Almighty, we are free at last!So for 17 minutes on Friday, I sat and listened to King's voice swoop over the crowd at the Lincoln Memorial on a sweltering August day in 1963:... the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination ...We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now ...Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning ...In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds ...We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality ...
