It was an experience he did not soon forget. On Tuesday, Branson dined with his two daughters at Ninety Acres Culinary Center and Restaurant, celebrating the completion of the first phase of a $90 million resort he is helping create after the property was sold to Somerset County in 2000. Ninety Acres Culinary Center and Restaurant opened to the public Dec. 1, and is the first of three phases in the Virgin Spa at Natirar project which, when completed in 2012, will also feature a 76-bed luxury spa and resort.
Branson, the head of the Virgin empire, was fighting a cold Tuesday, but still shook pinkies and bumped elbows with dozens of people who crowded around him, hoping to catch the ear of the billionaire, if only for a second. A day earlier, Branson was in California debuting what he promises to be world’s first commercial spaceship, Virgin Galatic’s spaceshiptwo, and said Ninety Acres was a welcome respite. “It’s just such a warm, welcoming environment and it’s nice to be able to relax,” the 59-year-old Branson said. “I’m sort of here now getting in the Christmas spirit. My daughters have stolen a couple of recipes to take back to England with them -- it’s just been a great experience.” Somerset County purchased the 500-acre Natirar estate from the family of former King of Morrocco Hassan II in 2000 for $22 million, and signed a 99-year lease for 90 acres and the mansion with Branson and Warren-based developer Bob Wojtowicz in 2003. The rest of the land is a county park.
Branson said he was first attracted to the site while visiting Hassan in the 1990s. “I came here and I thought the property was just beautiful, the mansion was very English,” he said. “[When Hassan died] his family contacted me to let me know the property was for sale. We went from there. The team here has just done a beautiful job. When it’s all finished I think it’s going to be fabulous. We’re having a billiards table flown in from England for the main building just to give it that British touch.” Branson was not alone in his assessment. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” said Mary Ann Frances, one of more than 100 people who came to Ninety Acres Tuesday night to sample the cuisine and wine. “I never expected it to meet my expectations, but they’ve been far exceeded.” The restaurant at Ninety Acres is accepting reservations and the Culinary Center, which will operate as a cooking school, is registering students for classes in December and January.
