Hello!
My name is Ion Mocan and I'm here to talk about the book "Deep Work" written by Cal Newport.
It was 1921 when Carl Jung, the austrian psychiatrist wrote a very important book called "Psychological types". The book was important because it synthesized an array of differences that have been developed over the years between his ideas and the ideas of Freud. Earlier in his life, Freud and Jung were friends, Jung even was his mentor, but now Jung had different ideas that challenged the Freudian school of thought . To challenge Freud in 1920s took a lot of balls.
After the book has been published he needed to write a series of intelligent articles and books that would cement his new ideas. In order to write those things, that he needed to devote time for thinking.
A year later, in 1922 he moved from Zurich to Bollingen, a small village, where he started building a house called "The Tower" which looked like this.
The goal of the tower was to isolate him from any distractions and to be a place for deep thinking.
He was very busy in the city, teach and having many clients but he needed this time where he can be focuse
It was not a vacation. It was a need for DEEP WORK.
DEEP WORK IS ...
SHALLOW WORK IS...
The opportunity...
There are three forces:
There are two forces in the world: automation and outsourcing.
But there are three kinds of people who will not only survive, but will prosper:
Highly skilled specialist
Superstars
Patrons
HOW TO WIN IN OUR ECONOMY
Two skills:
The ability to master difficult things
The ability to product at elite leve both in quanity and quality.
To have these two skills one should master DEEP WORK
DEEP WORK is
increasingly rare - ironcally, i should bitch about this while giving
increasingly valuable -
Brings more happiness - Deep life is a a life worth living
RULE #1
Choose your way:
Ascetic
I have been a happy man ever since January 1, 1990, when I no longer had an email address. I'd used email since about 1975, and it seems to me that 15 years of email is plenty for one lifetime.
Email is a wonderful thing for people whose role in life is to be on top of things. But not for me; my role is to be on the bottom of things. What I do takes long hours of studying and uninterruptible concentration. I try to learn certain areas of computer science exhaustively; then I try to digest that knowledge into a form that is accessible to people who don't have time for such study.
Bimodal - Carl Jung
Rhythmic - yearly, weekly, daily.
Journalistic style.
Make it a ritual:
How long will you work
Where
On what
How to sustain your deep work (coffee, a walk)
Define what really matters
Set the parameters
Keep the score
Ask somebody to monitor you
BE LAZY - WHY?
- Declutters your mind
- Refills you with energy
- Work that is done after work is not valuable
II. PRACTICE BOREDOM
- Set specific time intervals when you will use the internet
(even if you work is related to the internet)
2. Don't use the web outside that time
3. Even at home.
III. QUIT SOCIAL MEDIA
IV. DROP THE SHALLOW WORK
Count - if in your job you are doing 80 percent of deep work and 20 of shallow, it's ok
Quit your job at 5:30
Be harder to find
Make people that send you emails work more.
Professions which dont require DEEP WORK
