Don't forget we have wardrobes and curtains too.As winter approaches a cosy night has extra allure so what better time to splash out on a mattress and sumptuous linens?Choosing a new bed can be daunting. Design is crucial in terms of craftsmanship and style.Craftsmen at Vispring are trained for years to perfect traditional bed-building skills.Mike Meehan, Vispring's managing director, offers advice and tips to consider before purchasing a bed.Plus, Simon Stewart, who runs Marylebone interiors store Charles Burnand, outlines how to create an urban luxe look…“Always choose the biggest bed possible,” says Mike. “Studies have shown that even a slightly bigger option can make a huge difference to the quality of sleep. When sharing a bed, the more space you have, the less your partner’s movements will disrupt.” If the room is large enough, go for the King, which comfortably fits two people.Clever storage is crucial due to the modest size of London flats. “If your bedroom isn’t particularly large, consider having a divan with drawers for storage to allow room for a bigger bed,” advises Mike.

We would suggest going for four standard size drawers, with two each side of the divan. The ideal place to store spare linen.Beds should neither be too soft or too firm. When lying back down on the mattress you should be able to slide your hand between the base of your spine and the surface. If you feel pressure around your hips, shoulders or knees, the mattress is not the right tension for you. When testing beds it is worth spending at least 15 minutes on each, lying in your natural sleeping positions.  As a rough guide, people weighing below 11 stone should opt for a soft tension mattress, those between 11 and 16 stone should choose a medium, anyone between 16 and 20 stone will need a firm mattress, and if you weigh more than 20 stone, an extra firm will probably best support you.Mike adds: “We’ve been making beds for more than 100 years, and know that mattresses with individually pocketed springs offer the best support, are reactive to your movements throughout the night, and work to isolate any movements, meaning that if your partner is tossing and turning, you shouldn’t be affected."

Pocket sprung mattresses tend to cost slightly more than the alternatives but are well worth the investment for a good night’s sleep.What is on the inside counts just as much as the outside. The quality of materials will result in a completely different night’s sleep. When sinking into a Vispring, the natural components shine through. There are health benefits too.“Natural fillings such as wool, bamboo and silk work to draw moisture away from the body while you sleep, before releasing it into the air to maintain a hygienic sleeping surface. This is crucial as the average person loses around a pint of moisture every night,” says Mike.Synthetic mattresses can make you uncomfortably hot whereas natural materials help to regulate your body temperature.  “Another advantage of beds made from natural fibers is that they are hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites – especially important for allergy sufferers.”Vispring have a vast collection. The charming Regal Superb is a sound option.

A blend of horsetail and British fleece wool, it is a dream to lie on. The six-coil pocket springs add just the right amount of bounce. Made by hand in a factory in Devon, the honeycomb-nested unit is sewn to perfection.It is upholstered with 1,000 gsm fleece wool and cotton, overlaid with a layer of 900gsm blended real Shetland Isle fleece wool and cotton; The Prestige divan, which consists of 950 pocketed springs on a screwed and glued solid timber frame is just as impressive. The level of craftsmanship is apparent with features such as the sturdy drawers, which mould beautifully into the fabric.The Eccleston headboard complements the divan perfectly and the faux suede mink colour contributes to a soothing look. Exceptional.WHERE TO TRY AND BUYAnd So To Bed's helpful staff at both the Fulham and Orchard Street branches are always at hand to offer advice. A good pillow offers comfort and the necessary support for your head, neck and shoulders. Singapore based company Ploh provides the bedding for luxury hotels such as the Mandarin Oriental group, Taj Luxury and Palace properties and selected St Regis and W properties. The down and feather pillows and duvets are handmade using feathers from mature white goose down and high thread count downproof fabric for the ticking."The typical Ploh customer appreciates fine quality bedding and detailed workmanship, even if it is not readily visible," say Ploh. "The most popular Ploh bedding items are the queen and king classic pillows, while the indulgent and luxuriously light Ploh Plush Robe is a very popular non-bedding item especially as a gift for loved ones."Ploh items are packaged impeccably and a joy to unwrap on arrival. They contribute to a wonderful night's sleep. Check the sizes when ordering as a UK king/queen differs from international measurements. For a king size bed go for a queen duvet (220x220cm);

two queen classic pillows (48x74cm) and two European Square 26 pillows (66x66cm). GET THE LOOK: SIMON STEWART ON HOW TO LUXE UP YOUR LINEN1) Keep the base colour neutral for duvets, pillows and sheets. White and champagne tones work well in most interiors, then add colour with cushions and throws.“When choosing bed linen, it is important not only to take into account the decor and style of the room as a whole, but also the quality and feel of the fabric," adds Jessica Kong, Hästens UK Country Manager. "Along with a quality bed, good quality linens are crucial to achieving a great night’s sleep. Linens should feel soft, luxurious and weightless against your skin, and, most importantly, be inviting. Hästens Satin Pure collection is made with premium superlight cotton providing a soft satin sheen for a touch of luxury in your bedroom”. Luxe looks: how to dress the Vispring bed for winter 2) Choose an accent colour to dress the bed. Once you have chosen your colour opt for cushions that have different fabrics on each side to maximise on your display options.

For our makeover, we went for a striking Nobilis Alpaca orange throw, teamed it with Jean-Paul Gaultier scatter cushion and built up from there.3) Mix your textures. We love this faux chinchilla fur throw that has the softest fleece lining.  It looks great on both sides so enhance the look by showing its reverse.  At Charles Burnand we often team faux fur with alpaca, cashmere and leather cushions to give a warm, welcoming, ‘dive-in’ look.4) Bespoke cushions are the ultimate in bed dressing and provide a truly individual look.5) For an easy, relaxed style overlap cushions, large in front of small. Drape and puddle the throw diagonally across the bed.  For a smarter ‘hotel’ look place your throw across the bottom and tuck in under the mattress. Arrange cushions in a more uniformed arrangement facing forwards.THE LINEN LIST: EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR THE LOOKSoak and Sleep king plain 400TC fitted white sheet £23Hastens Satin Pure silver duvet cover, £360Hastens Satin Pure silver pillow case, £60 eachCharles Burnand Alpaca throw in anthracite and orange, £227.50 each
