If you're one of them, could your mattress be to blame? A good quality mattress should last you up to ten years but any longer and it might not support you properly in your sleep.

To ensure you get a good night's kip, you should think about replacing a good quality mattress every 10 years, and if you notice uncomfortable nights it could be related to your mattress. You may think that a mattress topper is the answer but really, their purpose is simply to make a good mattress feel even more comfortable. Sadly, a mattress topper won’t solve restless nights if the real problem is an old, lumpy mattress that needs replacing. As soon as you buy new bedding it's a good idea to buy protection for a mattress, pillows and duvet so they will last longer and stay spotless. If you are buying a mattress make sure you test them out in store and know what kind of mattress topper would work for you. But in the meantime, here are four tips to maintain your mattress: Leave a new mattress to air for about four hours once you've removed the packaging. It should then be aired on a weekly basis If you have a sprung mattress, turn it regularly to prolong its life, although you can buy one-sided 'no-turn' mattresses if turning a heavy mattress is a problem - and some are very heavy.

Memory foam mattresses do not need to be turned, and some only have one sleeping surface, but they can be rotated lengthwise, about once a month. Vacuum your mattress every month, using low suction, and paying particular attention to areas such as underneath buttons and along piping - you'll be horrified by the amount of dust and other gunk that can accumulate there! Use a washable, protective cover to guard against stains. Never soak a mattress - when dealing with stains. Tip the mattress on its side and sponge with cold water - don't over-wet it. Blot thoroughly and spot-treat with carpet or upholstery shampoo. Rinse and blot dry. For urine or other stinky stains, add a few drops of disinfectant to the rinsing water. Persistent odours can sometimes be eliminated by sprinkling bicarbonate of soda over the affected area, leaving it for a few hours, then vacuuming it off. Don't roll up or squash a mattress to transport it - this can cause permanent damage Other bedding could also affect your sleep so make sure your  duvet and pillows are up to scratch.

To keep your duvet, pillows and blankets soft and clean follow these tips from the GHI How to buy a mattress Could this sleeping position reduce the risk of Alzheimers? How to sleep in the heatIf you are looking for a cheaper alternative to improve your sleeping surfaces, consider buying a mattress toppers. They are simply mattresses that you just put on top of your existing mattress. They promote better sleep without forking a lot of money to buy a new mattress. Let us take a look at mattress toppers reviews to see which ones are worth your money. Mattress toppers are inexpensive ways to improve your comfort when sleeping at night. It’s also a great and cheap way to re-use existing mattress and can even extend the life of your mattress. There are many brands in the market including those made from memory foam, latex, wool and even down or feather mattress. Here are some mattress toppers reviews that you might want to look into. Users are very happy with this mattress topper.

It is a high quality and luxurious product that comes with a removable mattress cover. Made from 100% latex memory foam, this mattress provides superb support to the body while sleeping. It costs £63 and can be bought off Amazon. It helps people sleep better especially those with nagging back problems. Some users complain the mattress can be a tad too warm for comfort while others are happy with the way the mattress is designed for heat. However, sleeping without a duvet or comforter in summer or warmer months is the best solution. John Lewis Duck Down and Feather Mattress Toppers sell from £75 to £130. Available in different sizes, this mattress topper is made of 70% duck down and 30% duck feathers. The bottom layer fill is 100% duck feather while the casing is made of 100% cotton. Elasticated corner straps make it easy to fit the mattress topper on any bed. When it comes to warmth, this topper does a superb job. However, users complain there is no real support on this topper as it just feels like sleeping on a duvet.

In addition, feathers sometimes poke through and are prickly. Another helpful feedback amongst mattress toppers reviews is that of the Devon Duvets British Wool Mattress Toppers. Those who are not so fond of duck feathers can try these mattresses. They also received rave reviews from consumers saying the mattress topper gives support, is comfortable and keeps warm. The cover is made from 100% flannel cotton which makes it a soft material. Made of natural wool, the material is low maintenance while providing heat and allowing the mattress to breathe naturally. This mattress costs from £110 to £190. A major complaint from users is that it is not possible to wash it at all (spot clean only). The wool also thins down very quickly making it feel like a couple of woollen blankets on top of your old mattress. Hear what our customers have to say... Love our new mattress, it's comfortable, cool, supportive and looks great. It's also practical with the storage, stylish with great colour choices and there is a style and design to suit everyone.

Despite having a new baby I am sleeping far better than on my old bed, it was comfortable whilst I was heavily pregnant and still is with our new baby joining us in bed baby Emmett gives it his seal of approval. I was picked by mnhq to review this product which I received for free. This review is in my own words and reflects my true opinion We have had our new bed for just over 2 weeks now and honestly could not be happier with it. It looks stylish in the room and you can tell that the actual craftsmanship of the bed is of a high standard. A divan would not be my first choice (room to small for a frame) but the matching base and headboard look great. The mattress itself is just fantastic, soft but at the same time supportive and I love the height and feel of it. My DH was worried it would be too soft when it first arrived but has been converted. We both find we ache less and are sleeping much better - not disturbing each other in the night. Overall this is a fantastic product and I would urge anyone considering a new mattress/bed to look at this range, you won't be disappointed.

We chose the ottoman kingsize bed, which allows you to lift the mattress up to store things underneath. The bed has loads of storage compared to having drawers under the bed and it is much easier to see what is stored. The mattress is sprung with a foam top, unlike previous foam topped mattresses I have slept on it is warm, but doesn't make you overheat. It is softer than just a sprung mattress, but very supportive. The mattress is very deep, so I only have one sheet that fitted it, so I'm going to buy some superking flat sheets. The biggest difference with this bed is that my DH has a jaw problem and since sleeping on this bed his night pain has really reduced. I also have a degenerating disk in my neck which causes problems and since receiving this bed I have slept far more deeply than I have in ages. The bed looks fantastic, the fabric is high quality and the colour blends well with the rest of my bedroom. This mattress looks like a quality item. The spotted fabric covering it looks really nice!

Our experiences in dealing with the company have been positive. Our white company extra deep sheets don't fit over it - I have a super King flat mattress on our king sized bed, which works fine. The mattress is a little bit bigger than our old one, so it sits on the bed frame (sleigh bed) very snugly which makes tucking the sheets and doona into the end a bit hard on the fingernails!Foam just isn't my thing! It is very supportive with springs and a foam topper, but I just don't like the feel of foam. We have put a thin feather topper on top to give it a cosier feel - the mattress did feel a bit chilly for me, but then I'm used to a feather topper. That said, I have slept very well on it. My husband had a sore back during the first week, but he is very happy with it now. So my advice is - if you like the feel of it, if you like the idea of foam, then go for it - you'll be thrilled. But if you don't like foam, you'll not love it. Supportive yet pillowy this bed feels amazing I absolutely love it.

I have the ottoman version which has loads of storage. I look forward to bedtime! We received this mattress as part of a product trial with Mumsnet and have not been disappointed. It’s an incredibly deep and sumptuous mattress. It feels very soft (but without that horrible sinking feeling that soft mattresses have) and at the same time very supportive. In the last few weeks we have slept soundly and comfortably. Having previously spent a lot less on mattresses, I am now convinced that you get what you pay for with a mattress. In response to the previous reviewer’s question mark over rotating the mattress (ie head to foot, it does not need turning over), we’ve done this for the first time this week and it was fine. Although the mattress is very big there are sturdy fabric handles on the side and the mattress slides around quite easily. It is a two person task though If you looked up comfortable in the dictionary you would find a picture of the Serene mattress. It is soft yet wonderfully supportive.

The foam layer moulds to the shape of your body but is not too hot. It is just superb! Over-dramatic as it sounds, this bed has been literally life-changing. I can honestly say I am getting the best sleep in years, which in turn is making my days so much more productive. I will never try to save money on a mattress again, the investment is worth every penny. I hadn't realised how uncomfortable our old mattress was until we replaced it with this one! Because the mattress has a foam later on top of springs it feels firm but luxurious and comfortable at the same time. The mattress is quite thick and heavy to turn (end to end) but very good quality. I think my back pain has lessened recently and I feel more refreshed on waking and I think the Serene mattress has definitely contributed to that. We have had our new bed for just over a week. Our last bed was very old and I woke nearly every morning with a stiff lower back and pain in my hips. I am amazed at the difference the Serene mattress bed has made.

I didn't notice it for the first couple of days, but I am now waking pain free. The bed is extremely comfortable and offers great support. There is no dipping of the mattress when my husband or I get in or out, thereby eliminating that rolling feeling on movement. To top it all, the bed looks very modern and stylish, especially with the matching headboard that we bought. The covering on the mattress is unusual and looks really nice. The bed feels and looks like a quality product. I have to admit, despite our previous mattress being 14 yrs old, it was a good one (made by Spink and Edgar for John Lewis). I was still comfortable on it, and though conscious of hygiene issues I found myself dreading saying goodbye to it. And worrying that we wouldn't get on with the Slumberland Serene. Delighted to be proved wrong. It really supports, is not too hot (I was worried about that), and it looks great. Really modern fabric / design and so deep. Best sleep in ages. I don't want to get up.

Not rotated yet but we will manage - it's so worth it! I hadn't realised how much difference a new bed would make to my rest and relaxation. The serene is truly the most comfortable bed I have slept in. I was under the impression that a firm mattress was best for your back, but always preferred the feel of a softer mattress. This provides both, the snuggly top layer for the comfort and the firmer lower layers for support. The bed looks sleek and stylish, and has given us the best nights sleep we've had in a long time. Never again will I overlook the importance of a fantastic mattress. I would recommend this bed to anyone! We all know that it is important to have a decent bed; we spend a third of our lives there. But it is a big investment and one taken only relatively rarely. Our old mattress was about 15 years old and had definitely seen better days. I had always thought it was pretty good quality but it had stopped supporting us properly and sleep had become very uncomfortable.

The Slumberland Serene is just fabulous. It is a good looking bed and built well. The Serene mattress is very deep and is pocket sprung (very high spring count) with a layer of foam on top. In just a week, we are both sleeping so much better; we are not waking through the night, not suffering sore backs and necks in the morning. I had worried that we would be hot, but I haven't found it uncomfortable at all. Just cosy and very, very comfortable. New sheets needed, as it is so deep, but that has just added to the feeling of luxury! Just one potential problem; it is a no turn mattress (great!) BUT the little accompanying pamphlet suggests rotating it every two weeks for the first six months' and then once a month thereafter. It is such a huge mattress, I am not sure how easy that will be ...I might have to report back on that one. I am currently decorating my daughter's bedroom. While the Serene might be a bit on the expensive side, I will certainly be looking at buying a Slumberland mattress.
