A Japanese futon consists of two parts: a shikibuton and a kakebuton. The shikibuton is the mattress, and the kakebuton is the quilt. We import limited quantities of hand-made quality futons from a small family-run business on Shikoku. We do not sell mattresses for sofa beds, chairs or slatted bases. Authentic Japanese futons require a solid flat surface. Both the shikibuton & kakebuton come individually stitched (quilted) and therefore, need to be covered. So don't forget to add one or two to your order. You never sleep directly on or beneath these (unless you own a cleaning business). Traditionally, kakebuton quilts are covered with a white sheet cover (see the image below) which doesn't always show off the pattern. So we have reversed the design and have used the plain white material to go on the outside of the quilt and used the patterned fabric to make the covers with.
