David Cameron wheels baby Florence around in the £400 Bugaboo Bee stroller, though she sleeps in a c [] The news that thieves are targeting designer baby buggies will not surprise anyone who knows how  much they cost. New parents regularly spend several hundred pounds on each smart set  of wheels. A study from Halifax Home Insurance has revealed that thefts of baby strollers have almost doubled in the past year, fuelling a thriving black market worth an estimated £60million. Sales of top-of-the-range buggies have risen by 40 per cent as the latest models become more sophisticated and their high resale value has made them a prime target for opportunist thieves.

FOLLOW THE EXPRESS ON TWITTER! Criminals are now even targeting specific models: the Bugaboo Bee Plus, costing more than £400, Silver Cross 3D at £250, Quinny Zapp from £150 and the Maclaren Techno XT, retailing at £196, are among the most targeted. Unoccupied strollers are taken most frequently from inside the home or just outside the property while car parks, cafés and restaurants are other  buggy-theft hotspots. Parents are unwittingly fuelling this new crime wave by purchasing second-hand buggies on auction websites.recently put together advice for parents on keeping their buggies safe including buying a buggy lock (similar to a bike lock), keeping your pushchair in sight at  all times when out and securing it somewhere safe when at home. It is clear the rise of the super-buggy is a victim of its own success with this latest trend in thefts. The top of the range Bugaboo Cameleon, £749, is a baby must-have after being chosen by actress Gwyneth Paltrow as well as being featured in the Hollywood blockbuster Sex And The City.

It seems that style, not practicality, is the first consideration for 21st-century parents and kitting out your baby  has never been more expensive or competitive. The UK baby products market is worth £1.12billion. While disposable nappies account for nearly half the sales, a whopping 40 per cent is spent on transport and furniture, including luxury buggies. The choice is breathtaking and often led by the celebrity pack who appear to give birth to a baby and a fashion range at the same time. Leading designers such as Marc Jacobs, Kenzo, Dior, Missoni and Stella McCartney have  their own baby ranges. However, times are changing and it is today’s new dads who are leading  the way as they no longer talk about which car they drive but which buggy  they push. Much of this new attitude is down to the creator of the Bugaboo buggy Max Barenbrug, whose plan was to make a pram that a man would like by incorporating a chunky outdoor image. It has given his company annual revenues of £63million.

There are all-terrain or jogger buggies flooding the market with numerous websites debating the relative merits  of 16 or 20-in wheels. In the last decade baby equipment has become not just expensive but incredibly complicated too. Last week in the park my son handed me the buggy containing both my three and one-year-old granddaughters and went off to a meeting. When it was time to go home I struggled to fold up the buggy. even with three sets of parents and a park keeper braced against it, it remained rigid and unyielding. I had to heave it into the car upright and drive home with the boot open. It's obvious that many of these purchases are not so much for the baby’s needs as much as parental desires. Being seen with the smartest stroller is like swinging the latest designer handbag. Nevertheless, economies have to be made somewhere and it’s reassuring to know that while David Cameron was seen last weekend wheeling baby Florence around in the new £400 Bugaboo Bee stroller, he claims she sleeps in a cardboard box decorated by her six-year-old sister Nancy.

Perhaps it’s only a matter of time before Baby Dior brings out a designer version of that very box.
