Repainting an iron bed might reduce resale value, but paint isn't permanent on iron. Whether inherited or unearthed at an estate sale or flea market, antique iron beds have both aesthetic and monetary value. They usually have survived several households and borne the weight of many owners. Some were painted, some suffered damage and some were repaired. It’s nearly impossible to know the full history of an antique bed, but restoring one is a worthwhile chore. Unless the bed needs serious repair, most restorations only involve cleaning or removing paint and protecting the iron. If any part is broken, there is no way to repair it without the services of a professional welder.

Roll out 4 ml black-plastic sheeting in a spot where the it will receive the most sun for the longest period of time. Lay a headboard or footboard on the sheeting. Cut the sheeting several inches larger than the headboard in all directions, using scissors. Cut another sheet of plastic the same size. Tape the two layers of sheeting together along three of the four edges, making a large plastic bag with one open end. Apply as much tape as needed to seal the edges completely. Slip the headboard or footboard into the bag. Raise the open end of the bag with the headboard inside and pour in 1/2 cup washing soda. Washing soda is sodium carbonate — not the same as baking soda. Fill the bag with approximately 2 gallons of water from a garden hose. Fold the open end of the bag over and seal it with duct tape. Lay it on the ground. Make bags and fill them with water and washing soda for all painted pieces of the antique bed. Leave them in the sun all day as the black plastic collects solar heat, which heats the soda and water to soften and loosen the paint.

Put on a pair of water-resistant gloves and open one of the bags at the end of the day. Wipe or peel off a small area of paint, using a rag. The paint will not dissolve as it would with chemical stripper; it should soften and become rubbery. If the paint doesn’t come off, reseal the bag. Let it continue soaking overnight and throughout the next day, then check it again. If the paint wipes off easily, remove the iron piece and continue wiping off the paint. Use a wooden or plastic scraper for stubborn spots, if necessary. Repeat for each piece. Dry all pieces thoroughly to prevent rust, using cotton rags. If the paint doesn’t wipe off after the second day, sand or scrape the pieces. Sand painted areas by hand with medium- and fine-grit sandpaper. Reach paint in smaller spaces with a wire brush. Scrape off stubborn paint with a metal scraper or putty knife. Wipe off the sanding and scraping residue, using a rag. Melt pure beeswax in a microwave on "Low" power. Alternatively, melt the beeswax in a double boiler.
