As a result of recent scandals, I am realizing the enormous amount of time that our politicians waste with irresponsible companies like Facebook. They and their teams spend hundreds of hours researching the activity of these companies: what they do with our data, what they do with those third party companies that work with them (such as Cambridge Analytica), how they influence society and whether that influence is too much, or if it obeys shady interests.

Politicians may be ignorant in technological matters, inept and clumsy, and we may laugh when someone smarter than them is summoned to answer their questions; but those we vote for (and those who do not vote for) must focus on solving important problems such as unemployment, universal health and education, security, hunger inside and outside our countries, gender violence and violence against all those that are disadvantaged in any way, the inequality, the climate change and the well-being of our elder and sick people.

At least I do not want to contribute to such an opportunity cost: the cost of everything that politicians and their teams fail to do while thinking of Facebook. Instagram is part of Facebook and, with their stories and other similar changes, they are increasingly similar. In the matter of the transfer of data, and the permissions granted to third-party applications with privacy policies that are increasingly difficult to understand, Instagram and Facebook are indistinguishable.

For all these reasons I will close my Instagram account, just a few weeks after closing my Facebook account. I will continue posting pictures on twitter (https://twitter.com/gvisoc) and in australiando (https://australiando.es).

The next thing is to look closely to WhatsApp and decide accordingly.
