Black is fine, but it can also read "bachelor pad" very easily, and I think black leather is generally much less luxurious looking than dark brown leather since in the latter, you can see the veins of the leather, the wear lines (a good thing in my book), etc.

I'm not sure why, but black dyes, whether applied to leather or cashmere, can often have the effect of roughening up the material. Dark brown leather sofas tend age in a nice, mellow, beautiful way whereas black is much less forgiving.Given that both colors are neutral, you won't have a problem mixing or matching furniture. Are your walls white? If they are, I think black leather furniture can look a little harsh against white walls unless it's put together carefully. I tend to like black leather sofas in dark-walled rooms. Also, please consider a warmer camel-toned leather sofa rather than just dark brown. It looks richer, and if you already have a bunch of dark wood furniture, it'll help lighten things up a little. Too much dark leather + dark furniture can be tricky, I think. Look for a brown that has a little tinge of orange or red in it. This is the Reese sofa from Room & Board. It has really nice midcentury-inspired lines, and the solid wood tapering legs make it look like a more expensive piece than it really is.

It's also a sofa that reads "masculine and grown-up" rather than "bachelor pad." This sofa is about $3,000 so it's not outrageous but not inexpensive, either. If you're on a budget, you really can't beat the Ikea Sater sofa for its balance of price and style. It's advertised as "bonded leather" but be aware that it's essentially fake leather. Which really, if you're not very invested in having nice furniture, is okay. It will hold up fine and it's very easy to mop up stains and spills. It looks more expensive than its $400 price-tag, too. I would recommend swapping out the legs of the Sater. The aluminum legs it comes with look a little cheap, so if you can, replace them with tapered wood legs (I think they sell these through Ikea, also, or there are lots of shops online that offer Ikea upgrades like better sofa legs). Consider not just the current room, but where you might use the furniture in the future.... One of the advantages of being English is that you aren't expected to 'match', but that an eclectic design is not just accepted but celebrated.

Dark brown goes with wood. Wood goes with wood. Please note the absence of 'dark' as a qualifier to 'wood' - from where I'm sitting (in my drawing room), I can see at least 8 different browns, none of which clash.Black goes with black. Black goes with white, and 'off-white.' Black clashes with 'almost black.'My experience is that brown acquires 'patina', and looks great as it ages... but black acquires 'shabbiness', which isn't great. So, to the followup questions:Is one more flexible or versatile than the other? Will one lock me in to certain color schemes in future rooms? Why are brown and black your only two choices? My vote is for neither - brown and black have been done over and over and over - I would encourage you to try something new, something that you won't see in everyone else's living room. It doesn't have to be anything crazy like bright peacock blue (although that might be amazing). A neutral olive green or a muted grey-blue would work with dozens of color schemes and could fit into modern or more traditional interiors.

Instead of walking into a living room that is "nice" or "fine," fill it with things that really make you smile and make it wonderful. /pr...I completely agree with Jennifer Alden. Brown and black are hardly the limits of leather furniture! We have navy blue leather furniture in our living room. It's 15-20 years old and goes with everything (although in fairness the wood in there is mostly dark cherry or mahogany).  Why not choose a dark grey or blue and include a bright red or other bright colored accent piece?Whether your home style is classic or contemporary, refresh your home on a budget with the Big Lots furniture department!
