The 20-year-old was discovered lifeless in an upstairs room of Edward Tenniswood's squalid house in Northampton in January, Birmingham Crown Court was told. She was laid on a mattress on the floor with a sheet over her and her long, black locks 'splayed' like 'a halo', said a police officer who found her body. Today, jurors were shown dramatic body-cam footage of the moment cops discovered India dead after smashing their way into Tenniswood's home.
Tenniswood is accused of murdering the barmaid after chancing upon her outside Northampton's NB's nightclub in the early hours of January 30. The 52-year-old is said by the Crown to have taken her back to his house in Stanley Road in a cab, before 'raping and throttling' her. Police arrived at the address at around 3.45pm on January 31 after India was reported missing, having tracked the woman through cell-siting a mobile phone. One of the officers raced straight up the stairs of the terraced property, and today described finding the young woman in the front bedroom, lit by a single window. PC Steven Knight told Birmingham Crown Court: "As I got in the doorway I could see a mattress with a blanket over the top. I could see a shape of a figure. "It was the hair at the top the mattress I could see - black hair. "At first I thought it was fur, but as I got closer I could see it was her hair. The hair was splayed. Instead of being down, it was pulled up and around. Sort of a halo." Asked what he did next, the Northamptonshire Police officer added: "I took a corner of the blanket and pulled it away so I could see the face."
Body-cam footage from another officer who followed PC Knight into the room recorded police as they were confronted with the fact that India was past any medical help. In the footage, Mr Knight can be heard desperately shouting to the prone, fully-clothed young woman: "Can you hear me? Can we get a paramedic?" He then says to another officer: "We've got a positive ID." The constable again tries to get some response from India, yelling: "Sweetheart? Sweetheart, can you wake up? Can you hear me?" As the reality of what the officers have discovered dawns on them, a policewoman, off-camera, can be heard to say: "She's gone, she's gone. In court, PC Knight was asked about a statement he made in which he described the sheet having been pulled across the young woman's face. But on the ninth day of Tenniswood's trial, he told the jury 'it's plain it actually wasn't' covering India's face, but was pulled right up under her chin. Tenniswood has alleged he charmed the 20-year-old woman into bed with him, but then accidentally killed his victim during 'loving' sex by throttling her.
He told the court: "I, in my over-eagerness to please her, either sustained the pressure just too long or just gripped too tightly." Self-confessed alcoholic Tenniswood also claimed India had passionately kissed him first in a 'surprise' move while still downstairs, and then during 'vigorous love-making' had guided his hands to her throat. In his account to jurors, he claimed: "Obviously I sustained the pressure too long and that obviously caused the death, in retrospect." Tenniswood then alleged that he failed to notice India's lifeless body despite re-fastening the 20-year-old's bra, and re-clothing her, while wearing surgical-type latex gloves, before leaving his victim alone. Instead of raising the alarm, he went out 'for 20 minutes' to get a kebab but then spent the next 22 hours drinking lager in an Ibis hotel until police arrested him, the court heard. The now ex-bookkeeper, who the prosecution have accused of 'developing a fantasy account' also claimed he once dated a famous cover girl fashion model, who cannot be named for legal reasons, when asked about why he kept newspaper clippings of 'pretty girls' in his rented home.
Telling jurors he dated the woman between the 'late '80s, bordering into the '90s', he added: "I've got photos with her lipstick on for goodness' sake, I wouldn't make something like that up." Asked about four photographic clippings, including one of all-female pop group Little Mix, he kept as 'ornaments' in his kitchen area, he replied: "They remind me of ex-girlfriends". He said: "I've had a hugely unsuccessful life but have been very lucky and had some very attractive ex-girlfriends." Tenniswood denies the charges and the trial continues.
