Magnolia ISD Approves 2017-2018 District Calendar Magnolia, Texas (February 13, 2017) – The Magnolia ISD Board of Trustees approved the 2017 – 18 calendar during the regular board meeting on February 13.The calendar was developed with the assistance of the District Educational Improvement Committee which is comprised of teachers, staff, administrators, parents, community members and business leaders.
Highlights of the calendar include:• Dedicated teacher workdays at the beginning of school• First day of school cannot be earlier than August 28 per state law• Maintaining the week of Thanksgiving Break• Christmas break includes 3 weekends• Maintaining the last day of school before Memorial Day Magnolia Education Foundation Announces Teacher Grant Awards Magnolia, Texas (February 10, 2017) – The Magnolia Education Foundation (MEF) had the honor of surprising 18 teachers last with the announcement of the 2017 MEF teacher grant winners. Over $20,000 in grants was awarded to 10 different campuses. This year’s grant winners range from STEM activities, to music, to gardens, reaching across all grade levels and subject areas. Magnolia ISD Student Leadership Visit to the Capitol Creates Unique Learning Opportunity Magnolia, Texas (February 9, 2017) – Superintendent Dr. Todd Stephens’ vision of a student leadership program focused on government and civic leadership continues to grow and prepare our future leaders.
On Tuesday, February 7, the student leadership cohort from Magnolia High and Magnolia West High Schools traveled to Austin to meet with local elected officials and to get an in-depth look at the operation of our state government. The 32 students along with school board members Kristi Baker and Joe Duncan, and Superintendent Dr. Todd Stephens spent a full day at the State Capitol meeting with state representatives and legislative staff members. Students of the Month Dr. Todd Stephens has been with Magnolia Independent School District since 1999 and was named Superintendent in 2009. Prior to being named Superintendent, he served as the Assistant Superintendent of Magnolia ISD with responsibilities for the supervision of the District's Curriculum and Instruction Department as well as Leadership Development within the District. Dr. Stephens has 20 years of administrative experience in education, serving 15 of those years in Magnolia.Dr. Stephens grew up in Temple, Texas, and was a product of the Temple Independent School District.
Upon graduation from Temple High School, he attended Abilene Christian University where he earned a BS in Education.He continued his education and earned a Master of Education Degree from Tarleton State University (TSU) in 1997. While at TSU, he served as a member of the initial cohort group of the New Century Educational Leadership Program (NCELP) at Tarleton State University.In 2007, he received a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Prairie View A&M University. During his post-graduate studies at Prairie View, he was a member of the first doctoral cohort in educational leadership at Prairie View A&M University.Dr. Stephens and his wife, Becky, live in Magnolia and have been married since 1981. They attend Conroe Church of Christ. Becky is a kindergarten teacher at Bear Branch Elementary School. McAllen ISD had the most orchestra students (60) selected for the All Region Orchestra in middle school and high school. McAllen ISD students earned 36 per cent of all available chairs, the most of any school district, following auditions at the TMEA (Texas Music Educators’ Association) Region 15 in mid-October. All 30 middle school and 30 high school students will perform in the Region Orchestra Concert on Saturday, November 14 at the McAllen High School auditorium. Three students earned first chair in their group. “Congratulations to all of these talented orchestra students and their hard working orchestra teachers,” McAllen ISD Fine Arts Director Jim Egger said. This follows on the heels of McAllen ISD having the most students selected to the All-Region Choir (30) following auditions held in September.
These students will compete at the Region 15 Pre-Area Audition which is also November 14. McAllen ISD’s music program has been designated a national “Best Community for Music Education” for three consecutive years by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. McAllen ISD is the only Valley school district to have earned this honor three straight years.
