Well you could reupholster it, of course! Lisa gave not just a new look to her old IKEA chair, but a custom one. As an unstoppable chair rescuer, and self taught upholstery DIYer, I love to sink my teeth into new challenges as they come along. This dilapidated IKEA (Lunna) swivel chair, grabbed on Gumtree (Australia's Craigslist!) for $20, had obviously been well loved and while still very comfortable, the red corduroy covers had become dated, loose, faded and stained.

I wanted to give this chair a bit of a fun and unique makeover by re-making the covers in my own (Spoonflower) print fabric. It took 2.5 yards of the fabric, and two days to disassemble the original covers, using it to create the new ones and sewing and fitting the new covers on the chair. Scotchguard, importantly, was applied to the finished piece for easy cleaning. I love that with a little vision, a tired looking piece can become new again. Thankfully it all worked out really well, and it is now a well loved favorite chair in the living room, with a whole new lease on life!See more on her blog. I've sat in it so I know it's comfortable. I agree with Tim Elliot, however I would like to add the following. IKEA has the following discontinuing strategies I can come up from the to of my head:The product does not sell well and all the stores and depots are carrying to much stock, so a sale for a certain product will be initiated to eliminate this so-called "cash tied up in inventory"The product actually sells really well, but IKEA can achieve larger profit margins by slightly downgrading the quality of the same product. In order not to raise suspicion they will discontinue the old product and create a similar product with a different name but with less quality.

This happend to the Expedit series, which are now named Kallax. There are many more examples I can think of but I will not share them, because they are maybe bound by some kind of trade secret.A different spin on point 2 is not to change the product name, but to change the article number. In the eye of the customer, this product is not discontinued, it just has a new number. To the system this means a new item with the old one discontinued. Reason for doing so, is once again higher profit margins. This can achieved by slightly altering the design by changing the material quality. I have seen this happen multiple times, the PAX wardrobe for instance. The laminate on the outside giving colour to the frame has been reduced in thickness and its resistance to scratch. The everyone's favourite Billy, same story, they changed the back panel of the Billy from 2 wide pieces to one single one that is folded. The seam is now visible, in the past it wasn't. This reduced the packaging from 2 to 1 and means less handling thus cheaper to produce.

Keeping the sales price the same means higher profit.Seasonal, every year the garden furniture is "discontinued" to be available again the next year. So to answer your question, where did the discontinued products go. For point 1, they are gone, forever (maybe in some second hand store, craiglist, etc.). Perhaps in the future the furniture fashion will change and one can find them again. For points 2 to 3, they are not really gone, they just changed names, look closely and one can spot the resemblance with a discontinued product. For point 4,  just wait, they will reappear :).I do not think Ikea has a centralized service selling discontinued items. But I know for sure that every Ikea store has an area where you can find bargains: old products, lightly damaged products, dirty products, unpackaged products and so on.It generally is located towards the sore exit, near the cashiers. If you do not find it, ask someone from the staff. My suggestion would be to search online. If you're searching for a specific item that they no longer carry you may be able to find it for sale by another retailer or by an individual.

Amazon and eBay often have items for sale that have been discontinued. A long time ago I found out my favorite deodorant was no longer being manufactured and was able to purchase enough on eBay to last me for many years before I had to go searching for a new brand. Be wary though and do your research. Sometimes an item is discontinued because it suffers from some sort of manufacturing defect and is not safe.Any DIY idea that will transform an old and dingy piece of furniture into one that's fresh and modern is A-okay in our book. So, it's not surprising that this homemade tailored slip cover from DIY Design grabbed our attention. It gives an outdated sofa chair a whole new look (and it doesn't cost much to do so either)! Photo by Abby from DIY Design. If you have moderate sewing skills and a bunch of fabric handy, you can make a similar cover for an existing piece in your home. Or, even better, find an old sofa chair from a tag sale or flea market in need of some love and give it a makeover using the tutorial from DIY Design.
