Ikea yesterday withdrew one of its beds from sale after a 21-month-old girl died when she became trapped between the frame and her bedroom wall.Millie Carlin had recently moved from her cot to the bed, and got stuck when trying to force herself through a gap to reach her favourite Minnie Mouse toy, which had fallen under the bed.Going feet first, she was caught and eventually suffocated after the bed frame pressed against her neck and starved her of oxygen. She was discovered by her mother, Allison, who had gone to wake her from a morning nap.Mrs Carlin, 41, and her husband Steven, 48, had bought the bed from the furniture store a few weeks before, and said yesterday that they did not blame Ikea.Mrs Carlin, from Mansfield, Notts, said: "We're not attaching any blame to anyone. It could be that it was just a freak, one-off accident and nothing to do with the bed."It was a beautiful bed - very good quality and very well made. It was like a smaller version of her older sister's bed. She and her sister were extremely close, and that was partly why she liked it so much."

She said when she had gone into Millie's bedroom to wake her, she found the child between the bed and the wall. She said: "She had managed to wedge herself down there. She was a dainty child but quite strong. She had gone down the tiniest crack feet-first and got down until her neck was pressing against the bed."If she had been a bit bigger she wouldn't have got down there - and if she had been just a bit older she might have known that she had to get out."Mr Carlin, who works for a double-glazing company, realised what had happened when he found the toy under the bed.He said: "Millie just couldn't live without it. She had just this one toy, and it went every-where with her. It was her comfort toy. She called it Bubby Minnie."They bought the £47 bed, called the Minnen, from Ikea's Nottingham branch because it matched her 14-year-old sister Bethanie's.The bed has a wrought-iron head and foot with metal scrolling down its sides, and can be extended as the child grows. Trading Standards officials said last night that they had been asked by police to assist in an investigation into Millie's death.

A spokesman said: "It would be standard practice for the bed to be withdrawn from sale, as would happen for any item in an incident like this."This is done as a precautionary measure and doesn't imply blame."He added: "It may simply be that where the bed was situated led to what happened."An Ikea spokesman said: "We have withdrawn the item from our stores as soon as we learned about what happened. We are supporting the police and trading standards in their investigation." & FREE Shipping on orders over $35. Sold by SGT KNOTS and Fulfilled by Amazon. IKEA is a Swedish Home furnishings company founded by Ingvar Kamprad in 1943 in Småland in southern Sweden. At the age of five Ingvar Kamprad started his journey as an entrepreneur selling matches to his nearby neighbours. From matches he expanded his business to selling flower seeds, greeting cards, Christmas tree decorations, and later pencils and ball-point pens. When Ingvar was 17, his father gave him money as a reward for succeeding in his studies. He used it to establish his own business, IKEA. The name IKEA was formed from the his initials (IK) plus the first letters of Elmtaryd (E) and Agunnaryd (A), the farm and village where he grew up.

IKEA originally sold sells pens, wallets, picture frames, table runners, watches, jewellery and nylon stockings. Furniture was introduced into the IKEA range in 1948 and the rest is history! The IKEA vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people. The IKEA business idea is to offer a wide range of home furnishings with good design and function at prices so low that as many people as possible will be able to afford them. Our mission is to give people with thin wallets a chance to furnish their homes in a beautiful and functional way. We call it “Democratic Design”.
