Got one to sell?Get it in front of 160+ million buyers. In a whirlwind of activity last night, I completed the dining room chair seat covers in a decorative mossy green and blue fabric. My parents arrive tomorrow and it was one of my last sewing tasks to be completed. Now I can focus on grocery shopping and the menu for the week ahead! We recently purchased this small dining room table from IKEA, as we needed something compact. Although the store can be hit or miss in quality, it generally offers functional furniture that fits my nomadic lifestyle. I picked out the round table shown above but wasn’t thrilled about the chair options. I liked the Borje chair style but the chairs came with nasty, cheap white fabric cushion covers. Fortunately, the cushion covers were removable so we bought the chairs with the plan that I would sew new seat covers. I’ve updated seat covers before and think it’s such a great way to turn a boring chair into a customized, beautiful object.

All you need is an inexpensive staple gun and fabric, and a little creativity. My only concern with the chairs was on which fabric to use. Not only did I order more than I needed, the company mistakenly sent me a couple extra yards! I love the fabric but wasn’t sure if it was the pattern or color I wanted in the living space. Since I haven’t had time to shop for anything better, it became the lead choice by default. Making an IKEA Seat Cover If I were upholstering the cushion in fabric, I would lay the cushion on the fabric and cut around it, allowing enough excess fabric to compensate for the cushion thickness. I would then use a staple gun to attach the fabric around the cushion with staples placed on the underside. I could have done the staple approach but liked the idea of removable cushion covers. I’m a spiller so being able to remove the seat covers and wash them will be a benefit. Since I already had a seat cover in hand, I cut apart the main seams so I could use it as my cushion cover pattern.

I put it on my fabric and marked around it before cutting the fabric to size. It’s important to make sure you don’t rush. I like to rush. Make sure that you align the pattern the same way on your fabric for each cushion you cut out. I have one chair on which the fabric pattern runs in the opposite direction. It’s not a big deal, but I notice it and it annoys me. Also, I found it helpful to take photos of the existing cushion cover before and after I cut it apart. You may think that you’ll remember what it looked like, but once you cut it apart there’s no going back. I quickly forgot how the corners folded and ended up taking off another cushion to see how it had been constructed. Overall, it only took me about an hour to whip these out last night. The fabric color is growing on me but is making me reconsider our couch cushions. For now, I’m going to enjoy the upcoming holiday and worry about that some other time.   Like Angelina and Brad, Beyonce and Jay Z, or Donald Trump and his ego, finding the perfect match is difficult, but when found, it is powerful.

For you simpler yet happy type, these two make breakfast snappier. (Scandinavian: Table: $179, Chair: $419) These two fair best in older homes, set in the Hollywood Hills is preferable, donned with Kelly Wearstler style wallpaper. (Modern Glam: Table: $1530,  Chair: $115) Modern Farmhouse is a trend that is going no where especially if its actually in a country setting. These two say ‘drink that cup of coffee and read that local ledger, while listening to Rilo Kiley’.

(Modern Farmhouse: Table: $269,  Chair: $127 for 2) Throw a sheepskin on that chair and you have warm minimalism – which is the only way I can actually do minimalism. (Minimalist: Table $499,  Chair: $325) I’m dying to go in this direction with a future home. It’s both straight and simple, while being curved and warm. (Nordic Zen: Table: $2, 099,  Chair: $178)  I love a pedestal table so much – it makes shoving in and styling those chairs fast and easy. That’s the former waitress in me talking. (Traditional Old World: Table: $729,  Chair: $288) I think that ‘contemporary’ would even be more accurate for this. Its new and simple and beloved by most people scared to go too far in one direction or another. (Modern: Table: $1, 600,  Chair: $560 for 2) Because where else are you going to drink Peroni from real Peroni glasses or espresso from teeny, tiny cups? (Bistro: Table: $398,  Chair: $225)  Seventies burlwood is going nowhere and when paired with black leather it gets a big dose of bad ass.

(70s Glam: Table: $1, 199,  Chair: $349)  One of my favorite combos here and I’m not even particularly ‘global’. I love this combo so much. (Global: Table: $749,  Chair: $398) For those of you with your uber chic lofts and perfectly aged accessories. Here is a table and chair that has that industrial vibe without looking too cheesy. (Industrial: Table: $270,  Chair: $145) If you don’t/can’t buy real mid-century vintage you can replicate that look with some pretty darn wonderful pieces on the market these days. (Mid-Century: Table: $659,  Chair: $145) Lucite, brass and black leather can go dated certainly but this combo keeps it looking modern and edgy. Remember when Brady used those chairs in his dining room and it was love at first site for all of us? (Modern 80s: Table: $1, 499,  Chair: $349) A table/chair combo that I want to sit at to play all my epic Rummy tournaments and chardonnay. I’m not normally too drawn to slipcovered linen dining chairs with skirts to the floor, but MAN I want to sit in that chair.
