Whether looking at interior doors, exterior doors, or patio doors, buyers are faced with a myriad of choices in terms of material, construction style, appearance, and accessories. Choosing the right door requires not only a balance of budget, needs, and desire, but also a deep understanding of the various options that are available to buyers.  Entry doors, for instance, not only convey a sense of style and welcoming, but also act to provide security, noise reduction, and a barrier against the elements. Interior doors, on the other hand, may not face the same requirements in terms of standing up to the elements, but still provide a sense of security, help to isolate one room from other parts of the house, and are a major part of interior aesthetics. Here are just a few of the choices that buyers will face when browsing the vast market of interior, exterior, and patio doors. Doors by UseExterior DoorsExterior doors have to stand up to harsh environmental conditions. Though wood doors have been a mainstay for entry doors for hundreds of years, new materials like steel, fiberglass and other composites offer a number of advantages over wood as well as some drawbacks.

In addition to construction material, exterior doors can also vary in terms of the type and quality of insulation they offer, accessories like windows, and in terms of size, shape, and hardware.Interior DoorsInterior doors come in a vast array of shapes, styles, and sizes. They are almost always made from wood or medium density fiberboard, but can be made of composites as well. They can be hollow-core or have solid cores. Hollow interior doors tend to be less expensive, but transmit more sound as a result and often feel flimsier. Solid doors cost more, but provide greater sound insulation and stand up to wear and tear better.Patio DoorsPatio doors, which are technically exterior doors, tend to be wider and often contain more glass than traditional entry doors. In some ways, patio doors are more like windows that you can walk through. Because patio doors contain more glass than standard doors, they are often more expensive, particularly those with enhanced energy performance attributes.

About Door ManufacturersIt is important to keep in mind that once the door is installed, it will often remain in place for the lifetime of the home. It makes sense to purchase a high-quality door from the well-respected manufacturer in order to ensure that, once installed, the door will provide years of trouble free service.   One way to help narrow down the number of fine door manufacturers in the industry is to determine what type of door is needed. For instance, some manufacturers specialize in wood while others specialize in composite materials. Some manufacturers create custom doors while others focus on creating high-quality, mass-produced doors at low cost. Some manufacturers will customize doors to match historic elements in a home, to match existing structures such as windows, or to provide precisely the kind of light, security, and efficiency features that a homeowner wants.About Door ConstructionNot all doors are produced the same way. Material often dictates how a door is produced, but even doors made of the same materials can be produced using different construction methodologies.

Solid doors, for instance, may contain different core materials. Some solid doors contain MDF cores while others contain an insulating material.Typical Residential Flush Doors are made by gluing Wood or composite stiles and rails to a pre-made 3-ply “skin”. Then the core material, usually particleboard, is “dropped in”. Glue is applied and another 3-ply skin closes the core. Then comes the press followed by trimming to exact size. Architectural and Commercial Flush doors start with the core, and the stiles and rails…almost always wood with the stiles matching the face veneer…are bonded to the core. The core is then glued between a crossband veneer and face veneer front and back, and then to the press and trim saws. The Architectural door has no gaps between the core and the edges and likely will have a thicker, higher grade, more attractive, face veneer. Fire-rated flush doors are made similarly to the Architectural doors as there can be no gap between the non-combustible core and the treated stiles and rails.
