Mail Slot Sleeve: A metal insert used on hollow core doors when installing a mail slot. Learn about hardware >Edit ArticleHow to Install a Mail Slot Are you tired of the long walk to the mailbox? Install an old-fashioned mail slot (sometimes simply called a letterbox) in your front door and you won't even have to get dressed to get the mail.

It's cheap and easy to do, so why not put on some pants and head down to the hardware store now? Decide where to put the mail slot. Find and mark the center point of the door. Align the center point of the mail slot with the center point of the door. Hold the mail slot in position and trace around it with a pencil. Measure the distances between the edge of the mail slot and the four edges of the inner flap. Mark the inner flap measurements on the door. Cut the hole for the flap. Sand the edges of the hole. Mark the lug holes. Screw the bolts into the lugs. Insert the mail slot into the door. Trim the bolts if necessary. The bolts should protrude out of the door only far enough so that the nuts can be securely screwed onto them. If they protrude farther, trim them. Mark where to cut. Press the nut flat against the door next to the bolt. Use a pencil to mark the depth of the nut on the bolt. Do this for each bolt. Use a small hacksaw to cut through the bolt at the mark.

Screw the nuts tightly onto the bolts. Attach the draft excluder to the inside of the door. Show more unanswered questions Remember to add a mail slot receptacle to catch your mail. They come in the form of baskets, cages, or pouches. While mail slots are customarily placed in the center of the door (widthwise), you can install it off-center if you'd prefer. Be aware that in some jurisdictions, letter carriers will only deliver mail to approved curbside boxes, so check with your post office or letter carrier before installing a mail slot in your door. Exercise caution when using a drill or saw. Watch your fingers, wear safety goggles, and secure loose hair and clothing. Take off jewelry and make sure you are in a steady position. 2-Year Home Improvement Protection Plan Used & new (15) from $9.99 Ships from and sold by Gatzies. The tricky part is accurately cutting the slot where the hardware will be installed. It's likely the mail slot you purchase comes with a template on the package. If you find no template, use the measurements given in the instructions to create your own cardboard template. Position your template about 36 inches from the floor. Using the template as your guide, mark the four corners of the slot opening. Use a straight edge to connect the marks and define the perimeter of the slot. Using a 3/8-inch bit, drill a hole inside each of the corners so the edges of the hole just contact the lines. Use a jigsaw to cut out the opening, cutting from hole to hole along the lines you made.

Hold the outside front face of the mail slot level and in place over the slot. Mark the location for the attachment screws. Repeat this process for the inside face plate. If your mail slot comes with a template, the screw hole placements may already be marked on the template. Drill 1/2-inch-deep pilot holes for all eight fastening screws. Mail slot sleeves are available to fit in the opening between the front and rear faceplates. These sleeves are optional, but add a smooth and attractive finish to your mail slot installation. If you're using a sleeve, put it in place now to ensure that it will fit. Trim the slot if necessary. Attach the front and rear plates with the fastening screws. 3-Year Home Improvement Protection Plan FREE Shipping on orders over $35.
