Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman The Eameses wanted their Lounge Chair and Ottoman to have the “warm receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt.” Often referred to as a twentieth-century interpretation of the nineteenth-century English club chair, this seating instantly became a symbol of comfort—and comfort was one of Charles and Ray’s key objectives for this product. The Eameses believed that design addressed itself to the need.  In this case, the need was “a special refuge from the strains of modern living.” A Playboy article on Modern Design explained that this chair “sank the sitter into a voluptuous luxury that few mortals since Nero have known.” The Lounge Chair is often referred to as the 670/671, after the Herman Miller part numbers used to make the seating. It combines factory technologies with intricate hand labor and craftsmanship. While today the Lounge Chair and Ottoman are icons of mid-century modern design, when the Eameses first produced the 670/671, it was noted that they had soft, wrinkly leather and plush down feathers—materials that weren’t considered modern at all.

The Lounge Chair and Ottoman can be seen in museum collections and designer homes across the globe, and it remains a symbol of luxurious comfort. The design is still produced today by Herman Miller and Vitra. Learn more and purchase your own 670/671 by visiting the Eames Shop. I think it is a cherry finish (when I look at the pictures). Can someone confirm and say it is an original ? Or are there some strange things about this chair? Here are some pictures from the seller... (price is 2200 euro) And also I cannot see the right color of the leather. I think it is black, but seller thinks its dark brown...? Thank you very much!! lounge & easy chairs on November 08, 2012 at 8:30 AM, updated GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Something is wrong when you can’t tell an iconic Eames chair and ottoman from a Sonoma. That’s why Herman Miller is suing a Canadian company for selling knock-offs of its famous mid-century modern designs by Charles and Ray Eames that have a place in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The suit, filed in federal court in Grand Rapids this week, accuses the Toronto-based New American, Inc. of copyright and trademark infringement, and unfair competition.

The lawsuit contends that some of Nuevo’s furniture products are “identical with, or substantially indistinguishable” from Herman Miller’s Eames lounge chairs and ottomans, Eames Aluminium Group and soft pad chairs, and other Eames Herman Miller products. Nuevo is likely to cause consumer confusion and is competing unfairly against Herman Miller by importing and selling furniture that incorporates one of the trademark designs or directly or indirectly uses one of the trademarked brand names, contends the company. “Nuevo sells its knock-off furniture items, directly or indirectly, to retailers, who sell the knock-off furniture to consumers, sometimes in connection with the Eames trademark,” according to the suit. under the monikers Sonoma, Churchill, Vesper and Soprano, the suit alleges. MLive found access to those images were limited to the website's members, an image of the Sonoma lounge chair and ottoman can be seen on this retailer's website. A Sonoma chair and ottoman, described as featuring “ a bent plywood frame, cast aluminum base, and CFS foam with top grain Italian leather” were on special for $1,994, down from $2,149, according to the website of a Florida dealer.

A Herman Miller Eames chair and ottoman sell for about $4,499, according to several vendor websites. An email request sent to the company’s Michigan sales representative seeking a comment went unanswered. The Zeeland office furniture manufacturer is being represented by the Kalamazoo firm of Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn, which is asking for a jury trial. The law firm filed the suit Monday, Nov. 5 in United States in Western District of Michigan, contending the the court has jurisdiction because Nuevo is doing business in the U.S. and has a sales rep in West Bloomfield. Herman Miller is seeking an injunction to stop the company from making and selling the lookalikes, have it destroy remaining stock and turn over any profits made on the venture. The company is also seeking damages in the form of three times the amount of profits made on the counterfeit products plus attorney fees and court costs. Herman Miller has several registered trademarks on the designs of furniture and the brand names of furniture.
