Organizations in a decentralized world

Today, 55 % of the world’s population lives in urban areas. Let that sink in for a moment. More than half of all the people on planet earth living in a city. Or more precisely 4.18 billion human beings. And it is increasing rapidly.

Globalization and its effect on climate change is one of the emerging mega-trends according to United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs is globalization.

Urbanization and the way we do business today makes the earth suffer.

Street level

Let’s bring this down to street level. Bigger cities with more people leads to longer time spent in commute. Spending 2 hours or more a reality for many UK workers according to Office for National Statistics in Great Britain.

Now let’s think about that for a second. You sleep for 8 hours. You work for 8 hours. You spend about one hour preparing and eating food. You should spend at least 30 minutes working out. 2.5 hours is spent doing daily chores. Another hour for entertainment. That leaves you with three hours hanging out with family and friends.

But wait a minute! Two hours disappears in your daily commute. 1 hour left for family meaningful social interaction.

One direct effect of this global trend is the increased commuting in urban areas.

Healthier and increased life satisfaction
