For the designer Hee Welling, they represent a new level in the combination of form, function, comfort, detail and aesthetics. The chairs are deliberately kept plain and simple and can easily be combined with other furniture. They also integrate perfectly into different environments and architectural styles, which is why the chairs were predestined for both private and commercial use. According to the vision of the designer Hee Welling, the About a Chair-chairs should be as suited for the home as they would be for a restaurant, a cafeteria, an office or a conference room. In this context, the simplicity of it guarantees the multi-function design and their ability to be combined. The About a Chair AAC 22 consists of armrests and a wooden frame.
The upholstered seat is made from thoroughly dyed polypropylene, the frame out of beech wood with soaped oak or stained ash veneer. A seat cushion is optionally available. About a Chair by Hay is also combinable with other seats and frames. For instance, the AAC 20 is available with a swivel aluminium base and the AAC 23 with upholstery. Compared to some of its legendary Danish competitors, the company from Horsens has a relatively short history. One might assume that the designers around the founder Rolf Hay would be especially subversive to classical Scandinavian design. However, that is not the case. Instead, the aim is to bring the Danish furniture design of the fifties and sixties back to life, as it was during this time, known as Danish Modern, that Denmark established itself as a leading nation for design. Instead of simply copying the old masters, the designers at Hay want to evolve the pieces in a modern, contemporary context. This dream is being pursued in collaboration with young and emerging artists as well as renowned international designers, and has already been quite successful in only a few years.
The cooperation between the company Hay and the designers is exemplary: The Copenhague Collection, for example, was created in intensive collaboration with Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and served to refurnish the University of Copenhagen with functional and aesthetically beautiful furniture. Working with designer Sebastian Wrong, a complete sub-brand called Wrong for Hay was brought to life and presented at the London Design Festival 2013.
