In the three closing years of the 1970s, the English quartet had one of the greatest opening runs of any band, shifting to post-punk before punk began to go stale and forging three masterpieces in a creative furnace so hot it burned out by the end of 1980. Those albums-- Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, and 154-- still sound remarkably fresh, and have been re-mastered and reissued with their original vinyl tracklistings, both individually and as part of a five-disc set, 1977>1979, that also includes live performances recorded in London (in 1977) and New York (1978).
Pink Flag was a fractured snapshot of punk alternately collapsing in on itself and exploding into song-fragment shrapnel. The record's minimalist approach means the band spends only as much time as needed on each song-- five of them are over in less than a minute, while a further nine don't make it past two. It's clear you're not getting a typical 1977 punk record from the opening seconds of "Reuters", an echoing bass line that quickly comes under attack by ringing but dissonant guitar chords. The tempo is arrested, lurching along to the climactic finale when Colin Newman, as the narrating correspondent, shouts "Looting! Burning!" and then holds out the lone syllable of "rape" twice over descending chords, which grind to a halt over chanting voices. It's all the bombast, tension, and release of a side-long prog opus in just three minutes. As if to underscore that this isn't a predictable album, the next song, "Field Day For the Sundays", rages to a close in just 28 seconds. The band acknowledges the thin line between advertising jingles and pop songs on the 49-second instrumental "The Commercial", but also write a few genuinely hummable songs, like "Three Girl Rhumba", whose guitar part is actually more of a tango, and the more identifiably punk "Ex-Lion Tamer".
"Strange," meanwhile, makes the mistake of sticking around, only to be eaten by spacey amp noise and quivering ambience-- a taste of things to come. Wire immediately left the crunch of Pink Flag behind on Chairs Missing, 1978's great leap into even artier weirdness and Brian Eno-inspired ambient experiments. Producer Mike Thorne's synthesizers took a more key role, propelling songs into haunting soundscapes and downpours of noise. The funny thing is that, though a fairly major departure for the band, the album cloaks its curveball up front, beginning as Pink Flag did: With bassist Graham Lewis's nakedly produced pulse being attacked by guitars. "Practise Makes Perfect" seems almost cheekily named for the way it builds directly on the constant crescendo structure of "Reuters", except this time Newman's ragged vocal is met with interjections of derisive laughter and the final comedown leads into a bed of gently viscous synth. That denouement foreshadows one of the album's most arresting tracks, the starkly minimal bass-and-electronics sculpture "Heartbeat", an openly beautiful piece of experimentation that morphs into a pop song without a chorus.
The album as a whole is less purposefully fragmented than its predecessor, the songs more conventionally structured even as they veer in unexpected directions. The stunning centerpiece is "Mercy", which provides the basic blueprint for an absolute ton of tension/release post-rock. Over nearly six minutes, it storms through thunderous verses with Robert Gotobed's drums shuddering away underneath. Each new section leads to a nastier climax, culminating in a blazing guitar-and-drum conflagration. On 1979's 154, named for the number of shows Wire had played to that point, the band moved further into the abstract. "On Returning", "The 15th", and "Two People in a Room" are concise, punchy songs that place the vocals up front, sometimes with two-part harmonies. The last of these is one of Wire's great, frenzied moments, with Newman's tortured vocals shouting down Bruce Gilbert's intravenous guitar riffs with crazed shouts of "My God, they're so gifted!" 154's centerpiece, "A Touching Display", out-apocalypses "Mercy";
it's a hellish soundscape that features Lewis' heavily distorted and processed bass fretting out a harrowing anti-melody. Despite the incredible highs, though, 154 is also the least consistent of Wire's first three albums, and a few of its experiments don't bear full fruit. One of Wire's overlooked strengths was their ability to write a tremendous pop song, as exemplified by songs like "Mannequin", "Outdoor Miner", and "Map Ref. 41 Degrees N 93 Degrees W" (an open field in Iowa, by the way). Listen to the harmonized "ooh ooh"s on "Mannequin", the softly sung verses of "Outdoor Miner" (which was only prevented from chart success by a payola scandal), and the transcendently huge chorus of "Map Ref." indicate this was a band that could have made an entire career out of harmony-laden power pop. As it stands, they didn't, and Wire famously quit a year after 154, claiming to have run out of ideas. Their subsequent reunions have put the lie to that notion, but you have to admire Wire's insistence on laying off when the inspiration doesn't feel right, even as the band's initial run remains an unassailable testament to its unquenchable creativity.

Accounting and Review Services Committee Members The Accounting and Review Services Committee (ARSC) consists of 7 members, all of whom are AICPA members. Members are appointed to achieve an appropriate representation among small and medium firms actively involved in the provision of compilation and review services. The Director of AICPA Audit and Attest Standards nominates the ARSC Chair and in consultation with the ARSC Chair, nominates members of the ARSC. The AICPA Board of Directors approves nominations of the ARSC Chair and ARSC members. Each member normally serves for three one-year terms, with reappointment for each term dependent on satisfactory performance. Members of ARSC - Biographical Information (Chair) is a Principal in the Assurance Department of Rehmann Robson LLC, based in the Firm’s Jackson, Michigan office. He currently serves as the Firm’s Director of Quality Control and Risk Management, and formerly served for several years as Director of Assurance.
Mike has rendered assurance related services to a variety of commercial and industrial enterprises, financial institutions, SEC registrants, colleges and universities and a variety of other corporate entities. Prior to joining the Firm in 1993, Mike was a Senior Manager in the audit division in the Los Angeles office of a national accounting firm and spent time in that Firm’s national accounting and auditing department. He has extensive experience with public companies, having served over 35 SEC registrants in either a direct management capacity or in a concurring or technical review capacity. In addition to recurring audit services, Mike has been directly involved in the completion of several registration statements filed for initial public offerings, merger/acquisition and secondary debt/equity offerings. Mike has served as team captain on many peer review engagements of regional and local firms, and has participated in the internal quality control reviews of two national accounting firms.
Mike has instructed numerous professional education courses, both inside and outside the Firm, on the subjects of financial accounting and auditing. Mike is also experienced in litigation support services. Mike was member of the AICPA’s PCPS Technical Issues Committee (TIC) from 2009-2012, currently sits on the Auditing Standards Board’s Attest Standards Clarity Task Force, and is a member of the AICPA’s Clarity Project Standards CPE Subcommittee. Mike graduated from the University of Michigan in 1981 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. is a partner with Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP’s Professional Standards Group. He received his B.S. and Masters degrees from Auburn University and has over 16 years of public accounting experience serving both public and private companies in a variety of industries with an emphasis in accounting, auditing, and review and compilation services. Prior to joining DHG, he served over six years with a Big Four public accounting firm. In 2013, Denny joined DHG’s Professional Standards Group where his primary responsibilities include serving as a technical resource for the firm on research and consultation matters involving accounting and auditing issues, performing engagement quality control reviews, developing course materials and leading the delivery for various firm sponsored accounting and auditing courses, and staying abreast and updating the firm on newly issued accounting and auditing pronouncements.
Denny currently lives in Charlotte, NC with his wife and two children. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, Auburn University sports, and golf. is the assurance partner at Holben Hay Lake Balzer CPAs LLC in Denver, Colorado. She works with credit unions, non-profit organizations, employee benefit plans, HUD projects, homeowners associations, real estate companies, franchisors, and professional and closely held corporations in a variety of industries. Sheila is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Denver and holds Bachelor of Science and Masters’ degrees in Accountancy. Her professional and civic activities include serving as past Chair of the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants, Board Member of the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants, Past Chair of the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation, AICPA Council member, and chairing the Chatfield Senior High and Columbine High School Business Advisory Committee.
Sheila was selected as one of six Women to Watch in the accounting profession in Colorado in 2012. Sheila's interests include spending time with her two daughters, coaching two softball teams and reading, as well as, being a diehard Bronco and Avalanche fan. has provided assurance and business advisory services for over 40 years to privately held entities in the retail, wholesale, professional services, manufacturing, non-profit, funeral home, and life and casualty insurance industries. He is a senior partner in charge of assurance services and oversees the litigation support practice of Haddox Reid Eubank Betts PLLC, a large local firm located in Jackson, Mississippi. Jim Burkes is currently serving NASBA (National Association of State Boards of Accountancy) as a Director-at-Large and Chair of the Audit Committee. Mr. Burkes previously served NASBA as Southeast Regional Director, Chair of the Bylaws Committee, a member of the Compliance Assurance Committee and Awards Committee.
He is also currently serving in his third, five year term as a member of the Mississippi State Board of Public Accountancy with previous service as Chair. He is a Past President of the Mississippi Society of CPAs, recipient of its Public Service Award, and a former member of the AICPA’s Governing Council. Mr. Burkes was elected to the Board of Directors of NASBA’s Center for Public Trust in October, 2015. is the audit partner with SingerLewak, a regional accounting firm in with seven offices in California and Colorado, and has experience in the manufacturing, distribution, not-for-profit, real estate and service industries. In addition to ARSC, Jeremy also serves on the governing councils for the AICPA and California Society of CPAs. Jeremy is a past member of the AICPA Technical Issues Committee (TIC), which advocates for accounting firms and their clients in the standard-setting process with the FASB, GASB, ASB, ARSC, and PEEC. Based on his involvement with TIC, Jeremy was a speaker at the AICPA National Advanced Accounting Technical Symposium in 2012 and 2013.
Jeremy has authored the AICPA practice aids on engagement letters and the 2013 COSO framework, and was a contributing author for Save Wisely, Spend Happily: Real Stories About Money & How to Thrive from Trusted Advisors. Jeremy is the 2013 winner of the AICPA Outstanding Young CPA Award (presented to one CPA under the age of 40 in the United States for both contributions to the CPA profession and community service). Jeremy lives in La Canada Flintridge, California with his wife and three daughters. Jeremy is a graduate from UC Santa Barbara and is also involved with the Rose Parade and YMCA. is a Partner with Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP and has been with the firm since 2000. David is a member of the firm’s Professional Practice Group where he assists firm leadership in the development of firm guidance related to new professional accounting and assurance standards; the development, implementation, and maintenance of various firm systems to enhance assurance quality and risk mitigation;
and the development and delivery of various firm accounting and assurance related training programs and initiatives. Prior to joining the firm’s Professional Practice Group, David served privately-held businesses in the manufacturing and distribution industries. David was a member of the PCPS Technical Issues Committee from September 2013 to September 2016 and a member of a number of AICPA assurance related task forces, including the Joint ASB/ARSC Selected Procedures Task Force, ASB Other Information Task Force, ARSC Prospective Financial Information Task Force, and ASB Special Considerations in Auditing Financial Instruments Task Force. David graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Marketing. Prior to forming the firm in 2012, Dustin was a Senior Manager in the audit department of a top ten accounting firm. Dustin received his BS in Accounting from Chapman University and has been in the practice of public accounting for over 16 years. His experience involves audits, reviews, and compilations of various commercial enterprises, and not for profit organizations. Dustin is a past member of the AICPA PCPS’ Technical Issues Committee. He has also served as a technical publications reviewer for the AICPA and has contributed to audit risk alerts, audit and accounting guides, as well as, the practice aids, Internal Control for Today’s Smart Businesses, and, The Auditor’s Report: Comprehensive Guidance and Examples. Dustin has also served as a lecturer at Shidler School of Business, University of Hawaii – Manoa.
