Helping your business grow and prosper The Business of Hairdressing If you are running a hair salon you will know the amount of administration and management involved that keeps you from doing what you really love - styling hair and engaging with customers.  In this respect you are no different from any other business owner or franchisee, striking a balance between on the shop floor and off the shop floor activities.  Running a hairdressing salon, you might come up against any number of issues including: Failure to be on the right side of any of these from a legal perspective could lead to financial penalties and having to spend even more time resolving issues that could have been avoided had proper and prompt advice been sought.  Our team has been involved in this sector for many years.  Our involvement goes beyond just advising salon owners on their legal responsibilities.  One of our team is an invited judge at the annual British Hairdressing Awards! The convergence between hair salons, beauticians and spas, issues around chair rental and the like suggest a dynamic market.

Salon owners need a service from lawyers who know their market and can tailor a service accordingly. We are able to provide to salons an initial free audit of their current health & safety and HR procedures, providing them with a report, again free of charge outlining where a salon might be at risk of non-compliance, the degree of risk and possible penalties, together with recommendations to remedy the situation.  As this requires a site visit by a member of our team, it is limited by travelling time involved.  A more limited health check may be possible over the telephone. If you have a question or would like to send an enquiry to our business law team, please An introduction to TWM, our services and the people "TWM Solicitors has acted for the Tindle Newspaper Group for over 30 years.  We have always found them to be extremely helpful and are happy to continue with them and to recommend them". Technically speaking, this isn’t a change. But HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) became aware that their guidance was being misinterpreted, so they have clarified their position with regards to VAT on chair rentals. From 1stOctober 2012, if the salon you rent your chair from is VAT registered, they will have to charge you VAT on the rent they charge you. So it is likely that 20% (the current rate of VAT) will be added to chair rental cost from now on. The only probable instance where VAT won’t be charged is if you rent an entire floor or room from the salon, you can control who enters the area you occupy and the salon does not provide you with other services such as laundry, book/ reception services etc. I imagine that your business is not VAT registered, because your annual turnover does not exceed the VAT registration threshold of (currently £77,000). On this basis, you cannot recover the VAT charged to you by the salon and it will in effect be an additional cost to your business.

As a result, you may feel you need to increase your prices to your customers, in order to maintain your profit levels.
