Mark Christie was instantly attracted to the two £200 beds when they were posted on the website. And when he drove from Dover to Banstead in Surrey to pick them up, he was even more attracted to the woman selling them, Gwen Bryne. The pair immediately hit it off, sharing a few jokes as Mark struggled to get the disassembled beds into his 4x4. But when Mark, 43, returned home, he realised he had picked up the wrong parts to put the bunk beds together, and had to drive back to HR consultant Gwen's house to collect the remaining parts. The lovebirds agreed to meet up for lunch a few days later and the rest is history. Mark surprised his beloved with a romantic proposal in March. They have recently bought their first property together in Kent, where they live with Mark's daughter Jasmine, eight, and Gwen's children Madeline, 11, and Leo, nine.
Financial advisor Mark said: "I've heard about people meeting on dating websites but I've never heard of couples meeting over a Gumtree bed bunk sale. "Gwen and I hit it off straightaway. She had a good laugh at me trying to get the bunk beds into the back of my car, and when I had to drive back to get the rest of the parts I joked that she owed me a bottle of wine for my troubles, but we decided to meet up for lunch a few days later instead. I think that's when we both knew it was absolutely the one. "The funny thing is, I decided to treat my daughter to a new bunk bed because my ex-partner hated them. They're a pain to change the bedding on. "Gwen was selling them for the same reason and now she's still stuck with them a year on." The couple sold their houses and moved into their new family home together overlooking the sea last month. Gwen said: "The kids love it down here. There's so much space and activities like water sports that they wouldn't be able to do in Surrey. "We've got a great little family set-up.
