GOS

GOS

@lowfodmap.food

What are GOS?

They are FODMAP!

Approximately 1/3 of people with IBS are not GOS-sensitive. So if you are between those ones you are very lucky and you can continue eating those elements.

High GOS foods are:

  • Legumes (e.g. red kidney beans, chickpeas, baked beans, split peas)
  • Cashews and pistachios
  • Hummus dip
  • Soy milk made from whole soy beans
  • Drinks made with soy milk containing GOS e.g. soy cappuccino
  • Oat milk
  • Freekeh
  • Thawed green peas, butternut pumpkin, beetroot
  • Custard apple

Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), also known as oligogalactosyllactoseoligogalactoseoligolactose or transgalactooligosaccharides (TOS), belong to the group of prebiotics. Prebiotics are defined as non-digestible food ingredients that beneficially affect the host by stimulating the growth and/or activity of beneficial bacteria in the colon. GOS occurs in commercially available products such as food for both infants and adults.

Galacto-oligosaccharides are classified as prebiotics, defined as non-digestible food ingredients that beneficially affect the host by stimulating the growth and/or activity of beneficial bacteria in the colon. The increased activity of these health-promoting bacteria results in a number of effects, both directly by the bacteria themselves or indirectly by the organic acids they produce via fermentation. Examples of effects are stimulation of immune functions, absorption of essential nutrients, production of the powerful anti-oxidant H2 gas and syntheses of certain vitamins.

So you can understand that if you have not the right bacteria in your gut, they can cause a large amount of gas and bloating.

Galacto-oligosaccharides are a substrate for bacteria, such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli.

If you can’t tollerate GOS, maybe you need to remove the pathogenic bacteria from the gut and eliminate GOS from your diet for 4 to 6 weeks and than trying to replace the bad bacteria with bifidibacteria and lactobacilli. Than you can start reintroducing GOS in small amount and see if it worked.
If not my friend, this is the only way, so you need to start again the process!

Good luck😉
