THERE ARE FEW THINGS MORE WELCOMING THAN A FESTIVELY DESIGNED DINING TABLE, READY FOR ENJOYABLE MEALS WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY. THE HOLIDAYS ARE A TIME OF REUNION, CELEBRATION AND JOY, AND YOUR TABLE CAN MARK THE SPACE AND MAKE FOR UNFORGETTABLE OCCASIONS.

“There is nothing more profound than sharing a meal together—and the holidays offer so many opportunities to open one’s home to friends and family,” says Scot Meacham Wood of SMW Design and SMW Home in San Francisco. Wood’s lineage hails from the Northeastern coast of Scotland, and the designer has a passion for layered tartan designs, which he often incorporates into his work. In holiday projects, his splashes of plaid entwine red and green themes in demonstrative ways—with tartan dining chairs, table linens and even Christmas tree ornaments presenting a visual cornucopia. One project began with a room box-tented in about 100 yards of marine blue silk taffeta, trimmed in yards and yards of fire-engine red bias-taping and bright brass nailhead, says Wood. “Beyond the glamour of all that fabric wrapping the room like the skirt of a ball gown, it also created the most marvelous sense of intimacy,” Wood explains. For the dining room, Wood wanted to lay tartans fairly heavily.

“I used mismatched tartan china, imported tartan napkins from Ireland and used bright tartan dining chairs for seating. To add to the magic—we used a small grove of Christmas trees to surround the dining table—it was practically like eating in an enchanted forest,” Wood says. Fire-engine red flannel made for the perfect tablecloth with the brilliant yellow-tartan upholstered chairs surrounding the table. Small, well-placed candles added an ethereal glow and mirrored place mats and the grove of Christmas trees gave even more sparkle to the evening. “Most everyone looks better by the light of flickering candles—and it creates a luxurious sense of intimacy,” says Wood. Guests enjoyed a simple gift of a custom monogrammed cocktail napkin, neatly wrapped and waiting on their place setting. Add sparkle with gold-rimmed stemware from Anthropologie, played against the natural beauty of light birch square vases, fresh gourds, pumpkins, and pomegranates. Deep purple napkins were complemented by purple mercury votives and a cotton and burlap cream table runner.

For one tablescape, B Floral’s goal was to create a unique jewel-toned festive dinner party that blended a bit of femininity with purples and pinks. The challenge was incorporating many different colors while still having everything “flow.” To add a touch of luxury, the New York floral designer mixed premium flowers such as peonies and ranunculus with succulents and early grey roses. Grand candlesticks mixed with low votives gave a warm and intimate feel. For a formal dining affair, B Floral used birch branches to create striking ambiance. Set against a neutral, cotton linen tablecloth, the floral designer added floating votive candles, crystal stemware, gold flatware as well as a moss, coxcomb and pink Queen Protea to create the table runner. Gold Chiavari chairs offered the perfect contrast to the neutral cream linen, explains Bronwen Smith, owner and lead designer.

Designers Susan Cloar and Rebecca Lang of Design Studio Interior Solutions in Niwot, Colorado had an assignment to add “over the top” holiday décor for the entire month of December. They created an effusive vibe by blending natural elements – with berries from the Hypericum plant and Mystical Red Star, red tulips, and cedar branches. Tiny brass jingle bells with ribbons were fastened to each stem glass for a splash of gold. The goal for Gathering Souls, an event concierge service provider located in Washington, D.C., was to create a tablescape that brought the family together for the fall holidays and would easily transition into a beautiful Christmas setting. Layering fabrics, colors and accents was an important part of accomplishing their goal. The challenge was to add a foundation of understated elegance within a monochromatic design.

“When layering and creating a more monochromatic design, you must be careful when choosing tones of color as you layer, especially when using metallics such as gold. Gold comes in an array of tones that can go from gold to appearing bronze,” says creative director, Dawn Stafford. A touch of luxury was offered through the texture and pattern of the gold satin rosette tablecloth with serged edging. Real pumpkins painted gold mixed with ceramic pumpkins in white added a delightful flair, while crystal and gold-rimmed candlesticks and gold and crystal stemware sparkled with holiday cheer.
